AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+, is it worth it?

My system ran at 220 with corsair value select just fine without any increases in voltage or changing timings.

ok to check the AMD cooler fan noise query I disconnected the cable to the CPU for a few seconds. There is no discernable difference with the CPU fan off. The loudest is still the videocard. PC Probe reports 1800-1900 rpm for CPU fan. So changing it seems pointless. temp is 32 degress C at idle with PM to home/office desk. Overclocking to 2.4ghz. Cool & Quiet set to on in BIOS, AMD CPU driver installed. Setting to portable/laptop mode drops CPU to 27 degrees C. But at 1800 rpm it's silent.

edit ok disabled Q fan in BIOS, CPU fan is bumped upto 2800rpm. I can hear it now and I can understand might want it quieter. Temp is 25 laptop mode.

Its not a good idea ho have cool and quiet on whilst overclocked...

Qfan have options for minimum and a temp setting to change to faster rpm mode. So it should be ok. I got 35 after heavy loading

What is cool n quiet? edit checked AMD site, not much info there, I guess some kind of speed throttling ie power managment (slowing down cpu) Guess would be useful, when you play games at 100%, doing light windows work reduced right down.

you guessed correct

Well I would want this feature, makes sense that during DVD writing, word, browsing it's in low power mode, full power for games.

I set it to portable laptop lowered to 1.1ghz, played HL2 and showed no slowdown so must go 100% if it detects load...and throttles back down.

I always thought having C&Q on while overclocking mucked up your system?

BTW you will also need to set your power option to minimum power management to get it to work. :)

It does, often causing BSOD's etc.

I really wouldn't turn that on. Yes, you might save a few pounds of electricity every year but that's nothing really.

Hi,

I have an amd 4800, you can get to around 2700 on air, I use corsair 3500ll pro.

If you can overclock though and can get a good stepping the 3800 can do the same for half price!

I think the 4800 only really has the slightest advantage under phase, highest I've seen with around 3.167 ghz, compared to around 3ghz for a 3800, so perhaps it's a no brainer.

For the price of a good 3800, you'd have nearly enough left over for a second hand phase change.

One thing I have noticed is that Oblivion is very sensitive to overclocks, I have to come back to 2.53 ghz to get it stable with HDR. Anything higher giver droputs to windows and even ingame lock ups............

Raja

I intend to use my 4800+ under phase so fingers crossed :D

depends on stepping and motherboard then I suppose......

Let me know what stepping you get and how high you can go please....
