Looking to upgrade to this from a 4000+, noticed its in the this week only on ocuk but lists it with a 512kb L2 cache, elsewhere i have seen this processor listed as "manchester core" with a 1mb L2 cache, whats the deal?

Are the ocuk ones cheaper because it has been revised and a new one is coming out or is it a listing error?

All X2 4600's feature 512kb L2 cache per core. Just as equally all X2's featuring the Manchester core (or Toledo's with cut cache) feature 512kb L2 cache per core.

I believe it's incorrect to state the CPU to have 1mb L2, as it's 512kb per core.

No, it doesn't. The only 2 x 1mb L2 Cache cpu's on Socket 939 are the X2 4400 and the X2 4800 + The Opteron Dual Core line.

They've stopped production of all of them as far as I'm aware. OcUK's managed to restock their product range with 939 X2's by sourcing lots of 3800's, 4200's, 4600's and 4800's from Europe IIRC. No more X2's being produced.

hmmm I'm in similar situation i've got a athlon 64 3700.

Would I see much of a difference getting one of these dual core beasts.

I've noticed some games lately do seem to struggle eg supreme commander.

Totally new to all this dual core malarky would it be worth me getting one. Or is it only usefull if I want to do two processor intesive things at once. Eg play a game whilst unzipping something.

I went for the 4600 in the end, i find my 4000 can stall occasionally if im trying to do many things at once, so dual core should balance this out for me.

Yeah, any kind of dual core is great for preventing these system hangs, even my lowly PD 805 (@ stock ! ) is great in this respect.

Give me a day or 2, just got mine (replaced 64 4000+ o/c 2.8), messing about with it as i type this so should have some nice before and after tests to post soon enough. From early stats im seeing some mighty impressive results and its not even overclocked yet. :)

My 4000+ was retail and came with a cooler, will this cooler be ok for the 4600+ ?

Should be fine. My friend used to run a 4400+ fine on a stock cooler that came with a 3200+.

For the record, I just made the move from Athlon 64 3700+ to Opteron 165 yesterday. The system feels a bit snappier, especially with all the apps loading during XP Login.

Running at 2.6GHz 1.375V so far :)
