I'm looklng to upgrade soon. My computers a couple of years and a bit more old now.
It's got the point that when i'm burning a dvd or cd it seems to lag when i open a page or goto do something else.

I have a AMD 64bit 3200 and 1 gig ram using abit kv8 raid mobo.

I'm looking at the new chips and i'm not sure whats what and what would be a good choice to go for.

Is there a lot of difference between the san diego and the 64bit x2.
Also would i notice a lot of difference compared to the one i have now?.

AMD Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego has 1MB L2 cache £160
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ has only 512Kb L2 cache £217

I mean the as for price the AMD Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego stands out. But is there something i'm not seeing or understanding here.

Thanks for your time.

Ello Matrix,

Firstly, the X2 has two processors on it compared with the 3700 San Deigo (aka 3700SD).

So, if you are doing a lot of DVD encoding or other CPU laboursum tasks then the X2 is the best bet.

If you like gaming then I'd gow ith the 3700SD.

Why?

Well, the 3700SD has a 1mb L2 cache, this means that it will be better for single threaded application crunching. And those CPUs clock crazily well (i've got one).

But if you are willing to wait a month or two for a upgrade the new AMD chipset will come out. It is called the M2 but I dont know much about that chip.

So, when do you want to upgrade mate?

Well i may wait then for a month or two. At worst i would guess the 64bit x2 chip would drop in price a bit more?

I don't play a lot of games on my computer no more other that football manager.
Just use it for general use really.Just thougt it was around the time to think about upgrading and theres some strange things happening with my computer which i'm putting down to age and being on most of the time.

Thanks for your reply and info.

in the mean time use a defragger , delete unnecessery stuff, and use msconfig to remove background services and startup items you dont use. it reduced my startup time by 6 seconds and my pc is nice and quick now :). try it yourself :)
