AMD challenges Nvidia

It's kinda amusing to see AMD have, for once, actually used reviews in thier argument though, rather than just saying
'Nyaaaaa...we're better'. They've actually tried to substantiate it, and not with inhouse testing or slides.

AMD has a point and fair do's to them for challenging nVidia, When companies make bold statements they should be willing to provide evidence to substantiate it.

I'd still call it a tie personally - tho the 6990 is faster... I looked through a ton of reviews and while they both have games they are faster/slower in the average over several different reviews only put the 6990 at a 3% lead (which is still enough to give it the title of fastest gpu but I'd still call it a tie based on that slim margin).

We have calculated the average score of top 10 Performance results from 3dmark.com for 590 vs 6990, removing redundant submissions. Apparently the PWM of 590 is too fragile to OC, making 590 losing slightly against 6990.

Mean score for 590 is P9797.9, while mean score for 6990 is P10540.4. Waiting for more 590s to exceed 700MHz and upload results.

Nvidia point to reviews all the time, although they do in fairness, rig their reviews but nvm :P

Fan Boy Alert:D, lol, yeah it's not like AMD have lowered their standard IQ against Nvidia to be competitive..........oh wait a minute..........they have, and tbh it's something I didn't believe until I saw it for myself.

I think this may turn into a bit of an own goal tho for AMD, currently most savy consumers will reccomend the 6990 regardless of marketing titles, etc. - if they do provoke nVidia they might end up biting off more than they can chew as nVidia have shown their "hot", "loud", "broken" architecture does have the potential for a decent multi GPU card and with a little more engineering they potentially could produce something AMD have no chance of catching (at a cost to nVidia but we've seen nVidia will do things at a loss to themselves to keep the crown in the past).

There both great cards, if there already the best cards available and are overkills for any games, why try and blow them up by heavy overclocking them? the 6990 already sounds like a jet engine taking off, im all for overclocking to increase performance but no point until the games actually need it!

The only time the 590 beats the 6990 at 3d mark 11 is at a res of 1024.
Although that is not a game!
Imo through all the reviews I have read the 6990 just beats it.

Well .....

So Nvidia are a little bit faster. But the problem with this card is that is is held too far back by its lousy 600 Mhz clock speed, and you cant even get them up to 700 Mhz without them blowing up :x

The G110 seems to work at its best around 850 Mhz, the GTX 590 is simply bottlenecked too much by its low frequency. The GPU is actually a lot more advanced that ATI's current ones are, but if they cant get a decent clock speed on them, then it doesnt matter, they are too bottlenecked at 600 Mhz.

To be fair, I'm sure if nvidia wanted to they could have upped the frequencies slightly and beat the 6990, at the cost of higher power consumption and temperatures, hence a louder card.

It's a shame AMD went with such a crappy cooler, as it's sort of spoiled their 'win' somewhat.

That said the above graph is not really fair as it includes all resolutions including rediculously low resolutions like 1024x768. It's pretty much guaranteed that anyone buying one of theese cards will be using 1920x1200/1080p or higher, which is where the 6990 gains a lead.

A few samples have died at stock.
Also who wants to buy a card that can't overclock, as one day it you might need to if your not already running a super high res display/s.

2nd graph is a better indication imo - as I said I went over several reviews with a mix of settings/resolution and came to approx 3% in favor of the 6990 which is pretty much the same for all realworld intents and purposes - but still does give it the crown on paper.

I'd call it a tie as well, as I'm pretty sure nvidia could easily make up a few percent via driver optimisations for high resolutions (which we've seen in the past). Unless of course, AMD still have optimisations of their own.

For someone who prefers Nvidia it's a tie, for everyone else it's clear the 6990 is the faster card.

Don't assume and talk garbage, I've recently moved from 5870 which was a fantastic card.

I go by Techpowerup, they showed a tie with regard performance. For any side to claim undisputed performance crown is clearly rubbish as 590 is better in some games, 6990 is better in some games.
