AMD changing naming convention?

whats the point? the first number denotes the generation already

R9-9970?

9970 tells us its the 970 model in the 9th generation already

unless im missing something?
 
If they do it like: R9-970, R9-870 / R10-970, R10-870

then it would make the transition to 10k and above easier. 10970 is a long number that looks arbitrary. For advertising/marketing purposes I think R9/R10/etc and each SKU having a 3 digit number would play better. Would be interesting to hear from someone who actually works in the fields.
