AMD promises ‘never-before-seen hardware demonstrations’ for Computex Press Conference

Yesterday’s press release has not really been very informative when it comes to actual details regarding upcoming Computex 2018 press conference that AMD announced. We have just received an email from AMD with slightly more details about the conference.

The event will take place next week on June 6th in Taipei. The marketing campaign has already started and AMD is making sure that all fans will tune in to listen to what Lisa Su and Jim Anderson have to say.

The interesting bit from the email is clearly this line: ‘never-before-seen hardware demonstrations‘ and ‘details showcasing high-performance leadership and innovation‘. This smells a lot like Threadripper 2000, or mysterious Z490 chipset.

AMD also promises ‘updates on current and upcoming products‘. There are few topics that we expect to be covered there. Starting with Radeon Vega Mobile, and by that, I mean actual mobile high-performance gaming chip, not an integrated solution. This is the sixth month after Vega Mobile announcement at CES, so it’s about time we hear more details.

AMD could also shed light on mobile Ryzen H-series, which have made an appearance in 3DMark database. Those are Ryzen 7 2800H and Ryzen 5 2600H.

The manufacturer still has to reveal B450 chipset for mid-range motherboards and few Ryzen 2000 SKUs, such as 2500X or 2300X.

  • Appearances by AMD technology partners
  • Never-before-seen AMD hardware demonstrations and new details showcasing AMD high performance leadership and innovation

Computex 2018 - AMD is kicking all sorts of ass today with the announcements of its second-gen Threadripper CPUs rocking a huge 32C/64T of CPU power, the super-small Radeon RX Vega 56 Nano, and also the world's first GPU on 7nm. AMD will have Vega on 7nm inside of the upcoming new Radeon Instinct part, which thanks to 7nm will feature 35% more performance over the previous-gen 14nm part, with twice the power efficiency that means it can do it all with under half the power consumption. Crazy stuff. The density has been increased by 2x which means we can have smaller die sizes, or what I want - bigger GPUs. Bring it on, AMD. This now means AMD is ahead of the GPU game in one area, as even Volta is only on 12nm. It's good to see Team Red in their stride, and I can't wait to see what 7nm Radeon RX gaming cards can do.

Nice on the 7nm Vega, *such* a shame that their won't be a 7nm gaming part :(

Well, not until H1 next year anyway, and that's probably Navi not Vega. Although to be honest, if Vega is running on 7nm in H2 this year as Instinct I don't see any reason why AMD couldn't/wouldn't do a Radeon Refresh before Navi. Unless Navi is a lot closer than we think and Instinct is a test bed to get 7nm up and running properly.

I think right near the end when Lisa is back on stage, she makes reference to the fact that a gaming 7nm Vega is coming but to stay tuned...

Given the road map highlighting Navi in 2019 and the one after is 2020 alongside the comments from the bloke who is now running the GPU division pointing out that they will release something new every year until 2020 it would give some hope of a Vega refresh towards the end of this year.

Can't believe it's the same organisation that's made ryzen and threadripper. If they had their GPUs on top form they would be unstoppable. Really hope this new card does that.

Good news then! A 7nm Vega looks like it would be roughly on a par with a 1080Ti but with better DX12/Vulkan support, which would be pretty much ideal! Let's hope it's not too far away if it is coming...
