AMD console gubbins

I would like to see NVIDIA come back into the console market some day and show AMD how its done :D

Their inability to do so is EXACTLY why they were overlooked. There's been quite a number of problems with using nVidia GPUs in a console.

nVidia are too controlling, and part of the YLOD issue with PS3s was because of the nVidia GPU. Sony wanted to produce PS3s with the GPU and CPU on the same chip, but nVidia insisted their GPU had to be on its own package.

A similar problem happened with a crap load of nVidia laptop GPUs because of cost cutting measures.

Th funniest thing in all this was nVidia's butthurt, bitter response. Which was pretty much that consoles are crap and gay, and they didn't want the contract anyway because there's no money in it, so it's no loss to them.

OF COURSE they don't want the contract, after they realise they aren't getting it.

It's quite likely that Nvidia will offer something viable next time as they are getting very good at their mobile parts (Maxwell) but they will have to accept the margins as AMD will be extremely well-placed by then for this sort of thing. Bear in mind the selection process will probably begin very soon, in a year or so.

I think it hinges on their ability (or lack of) to produce an X86 CPU though.
