AMD cpu temp problem

I was wondering if any of you guys could help, this prob is driving me mad!

My girlfriends computer has started shutting itself down after ten or so mins so i had a look at it for her, at first i thought it was the gpu but tried another one in the machine but it was still happening,

then i realised that one of the cores on her cpu was getting up to 125 degrees!, so i took the heatsink off cleaned it all down and reapplied thermal paste, still was doing the exact same thing, so i changed the heatsink out today for a new one but im still getting the exact same problem!, im quickly running out of ideas (and money) for what this could be

the chip is an old am2 athlon 64 6000

Hmm, wonder if the sensor on the chip had gone out of calibration.

What software are you using to check temps.

hw monitor, it reports before shutdown that one core is at 125 and the other is at around 68, bios reports it as being 95 when i start it back up straightaway, obviously it shuts down pretty quick after that

I had a similar problem. My PSU fan had failed and my PSU was doing weird things, check the PSU is my thought.

Yeah its worth swapping the psu just to rule it out
Perhaps the chip has simply failed in a strange way or the mobo is giving incorrect temperature read outs, try touching the heatsink to see if its hot, with the cpu at those temperatures it should be very warm to the touch. If it still feels at normal temperature then it could be a fault the readouts from the mobo

ps yes I do know your hand is one of the worst things to use to sense temperature however in this case it should be fine as you are looking for general temperature feedback

cheers guys will try and get a hold of a psu too try and rule that one out, from memory the heatsink wasnt THAT hot but will check again when i get the chance after work tonight
