So something seems to of come on my machine and i got no idea what it could be. Im running the 7970 GHZ Saph Card and im getting every once in a while a slight system freeze than a message telling my my drivers had stopped responding. I have all the latest drivers installed and this isnt something that happens constantly. Its very random and im not even sure how i can duplicate up the error but it can happen 2-3 x in a minute, or 1-2x every 6-7+ hours. My first 7970 was RMA'd due to the fact i had some wierd lines going on but the replacement sorted that out. I never use to have this problem with my old 6850 which i no longer have so cant test it.... Ive seen some people from the world of google say it could be a bad stick of ram, others saying it could be psu related, im pretty lost at the moment. When i got the new card i did fully format my HDD and run a complete fresh install.

Any ideas guys or any kinds of testing i can do?

Thanks for the move was unsure where to put this as I wasnt sure if this was an actual GFX or system issue.

Zero problems with amd! I've had 7970 5870 4870 4850 I can go on!

The card ain't overclocked I take it! That's what mostly causes this problem!

Shouldnt have to overclock to get it working mate lol

He wasn't implying to overclock the card, merely questioning whether the card has been overclocked. As unstable clocks can sometimes lead to driver crashes.

To OP: What drivers are you currently using? 12.9 or 12.8? (Cant remember is 12.9s are latest or betas) I know i've been getting driver crashes on 12.9s.

a lot of issues with AMD lately

To be fair to AMD its not just an AMD related issue I had the same thing on my Nv470 for a couple of sets of drivers and then another set solved it.

I think it is related to a timing issue between windows and the drivers and it can crop up for no apparent reason and go for the same no apparent reason.

my advice to the Op is to try different sets of drivers, even uninstall and reinstall the same set can cure this, there was a huge thread on it on one of the forums I was reading but I cant seem to find it now.

Hope this helps.

I had this issue with an 5870 Sapphire card and it WAS common at the time. I RMA'd it and the problem stopped immediatley with no changes whatso ever.

lol so you changed the card but you say there were no changes what so ever

Using 12.8 currently. Tried the reinstall / uninstall same problems still.

gonna give the 12.9 betas a go see what results we get.

This is normally caused by an OC that does not have enough volts. I imagine the new BIOS on these cards is fine but voltage isn't (even at stock). This happens to both brands but the good thing with AMD is the ability to up the volts. I would add 0.06 volts and see how that plays. If it still does it, I would be returning it.

I had a few probs with this on a 560TI and a voltage adjusted BIOS sorted this problem perfectly.

This!
I had this on my GPU and it was down to bad OC, @op even tho you not OC the card yourself its still an OC card, up the volts a touch 0.06 and once I did this I not had the driver crash once since.

Well Well Well, just for anyones further help and those curious, a 2% power increase on the AMD Overdrive and a install of the 12.9 beta drivers and not one crash yet. Thanks all for the info, god knows what its gonna be like when i put this into a crossfire next week :P
