Right after getting back to my PC after many months away from it I decided the best way to start was to update everything, everything else is now up to date apart from the graphics cards, I run 2x HD 6950s in Xfire, its on Win 8.1 pro, current driver is 13.9, if i try to install any newer drivers 13.11/12 or any of the 14 drivers the install hangs about half way through, at the part where the screen is flicking on and off. i am then forced to physically reset the computer before using the driver cleaner and trying again, no matter what i seem to try it keeps hanging at the same part, if I use the driver cleaner thing and reinstall 13.9 or earlier there are no dramas at all.

Any insight in to what may be causing the problem, to me it says there are features enabled in the newer drivers that are conflicting with my setup, really want to avoid a reinstall/refresh of windows itself.

Finding this infuriating, have been considering replacing with a reasonably priced newer single card of similar/slightly better performance.

Follow these steps:

1. Unistall current drivers in control panel
2. After restart use DriverSweeper and delete AMD
3. Restart and now you can install you new drivers

Thats the best way to do it ;)

Edit:

You can also do a scan with OTL, after following my steps.

Does it stop and stay on a black screen? If so disabled in bios igpu.
It just hangs, nothing responsive and looping that chime noise when things are plugged/unplugged.

pretty sure the IGPU is already disabled but i'll check anyway.

cheers guys i'll give it a try and report back.

I only mention software which I've used previously, driver sweeper always did the job for me. So, I didn't look for any 'alternatives'...

Problem solved! thanks very much guys, it appears i'm the fool for thinking AMDs own driver cleaning tool would be sufficient, DDU worked perfectly.

AMD driver isn't very good for just GPU drivers it's a complete amd clean up tool and can do more bad than good.

Good to know you sorted.
