Dont use DDU.

Download latest AMD Drivers, and tick the clean install option when installing.

Does your pc still "function" when the black screen arises? Like in the background?

I had a "grey screen" issue where once it went grey, music still playing, fans on pc etc. still running..

then after about 45 seconds the pc would crash and reboot itself..

When the error pops up, can you check device manager to see if it defaulted to the Microsoft basic adapter driver or an error on the AMD driver? If it does can you try Win + Ctrl + Shift + B which resets the graphics driver and hopefully quick fixes it?

Is Windows updating the core driver, but not the software, automatically in the background? (or in some cases randomly installing an older version of its own accord).

Sounds like it doesn't it. Given the text in the message, and the fact the OP says it comes back after a week each time.

Microsoft Windows Update installed a Universal Windows Platform (UWP) driver for your AMD Radeon™ Graphics product which is not compatible with the current installed version of AMD Software.

The URL in the message tells you what to do @Wing-Man . :)

Serious?

It tells you. Using the linked MS article, do this:
  1. Press Windows + S keys together to open Search
  2. Now type Device installation settings
  3. Click on Change Device installation settings and then select the option No (your device might not work as expected)
  4. Now click on Save Changes
Then AMD says to reinstall their software / drivers afterwards.

Jobs a good 'un.

Righto. Well that is the offical solution so....

Do you not periodically go to manufactures websites and manually check these things yourself just out of proactiveness? I think I must check all my necessary 3rd party drivers at least once a month. LAN, WiFi, Audio, Motherboard, Chipset, GPU, Peripherals, etc. I mean even apps like CCleaner and others can tell you if / when you have a driver that is out of date.

Unless you are on the Professional edition and do it via Registry/Group Policy how that functions is a bit hit and miss - ostensibly now it only affects whether additional software such as icons, etc. are installed with core driver updates or not and doesn't necessarily stop automatic driver updates - but for some reason some people still get the old behaviour with that setting...

If you go into that settings page they've updated the description:

"Do you want to automatically download manufacturer' apps and custom icons that are available for your devices?"

Simple fix for the Windows update ******** of overwriting your drivers, use group policy editor to disable driver updates from Windows update, ddu then install the ones you want and do not be bugged by it again.
If you have a home version of 10 or 11 you will have to install the group policy editor install package.

same for Windows 10 and 11.

A group policy is using a hammer to crack a nut for single users.

Do what Firegod posted earlier and just make sure to do regular manual driver updates.

lol no who cares enough to do that **** regularly

Reason for using GPE to disable the driver updates is because Microsoft do some sneaky crap and sometimes re-enable the driver updates on Windows build upgrade. 21 to 22 etc
