I've just built a PC out of my old parts for the living room and i'm tempted to give steamOS a try and I'm jwondering about the drivers for my 270X.

Has anyone else used them with the same card? Any issues?

A little while ago (before the Windows 10 Preview came out) I used SteamOS on a PC with a 7950. The Linux drivers at the time were awful, although in fairness part of that might have been down to the games I tried using OpenGL in Linux and DirectX in Windows.

The main game I tried was Dota 2, which in SteamOS was struggling to hold 50fps @ 1080p and in Windows is able to do over 60fps @ 1440p.

AMD have put a lot of work into OpenGL drivers these past 6 Months, they are now a lot better.

Cheers guys, I'll give it a go if they're better now. It's a pita trying to click stuff in windows with a mouse on a sofa!

A fellow *nix user... with a AMD card too ..... :p

Joking aside amd's nix drivers have improved somewhat, Have a look at the post of mine that shankly has linked to see the difference.
Regards your 270 which iirc is Pitcairn based (7870) The oss drivers do well also. Down side to the oss drivers is lack of opengl 4. (Dying light)

Thanks for that Pete.

I got it up and running yesterday and most of the games I could play ran well. The downside is most of the games I play with a controller either don't have Linux support or are keyboard/mouse only which is a shame. (I should have checked first!)

SteamOS is good. The default installation didn't work as I think there was some issue with the display drivers during installation but the custom installation worked a treat.

Hopefully more games will get support for Linux, I'd be surprised if Valve aren't pushing it considering a ton of Steam boxes are due to be released.

I think that's one of the things the steam controller is for regards controller support. Looking at the vids regards it they have made it so it can be "re-maped". That's the impression I got anyway. Not looked into to much as am old school :o

Not tried steamOS for a while, I'll have to give it another bash.

What you played/tried ?

Personally, patiently waiting on Alien isolation :D
