AMD Drivers Question?

I was just wondering. I know it's reccomended to keep your gfx drivers up to date etc. However, does anyone actually notice a performance increase in games when updating their drivers?

I know they fix little niggles and change the CCC around a little bit. However is it really worth doing everytime a new one is released? Does it make that much of a difference?

I tested this theory a few months ago. I have a 6970 and I had whatever driver it was installed at the time, I then ran heaven 2.5... upgraded driver and ran it again, the score had actually dropped after the upgrade. Very marginally though, not noticeable in real life but none the less it had decreased the overall score. Makes me wonder.

If it ain't broke don't fix it.

You can use a set of drivers you're happy with and just download the latest CAP profiles for newer games.

You'll have to update the drivers every now and again but you don't need to do it every month.

Update whenever I can be bothered. The only difference I've seen is with BFBC2 loading last year. I think 10.4 brought good performance gains in BFBC2

Other than that, I couldn't tell you what version I have now, maybe 11.2

Generally as time moves on, the drivers tend to fix and increase performance for current games, but older games may actually lose performance by newer drivers as AMD change something to improve one game, which may lessen the performance of a previous one.

If your playing current games such as the witcher 2 etc... then getting the latest drivers makes sense.

If your playing older games such as BFBC2, then there may be a previous driver which performs better than the newest.

(ATI made a big leap with the 11.12 driver (5000 series), so try using something newer than that, although the 11.4 drivers where also meant to be a big leap for the (6000 series)

Ah cool. Thanks for clearing that up. I have the latest version at the moment anyway... 11.5. Things are going pretty good with games at the moment so will probably leave it that way untill something significant happens.

Seems ever since i update to 11.5 CCC crashes all the time. As soon as I get in a server it either crashes or doesn't. If it doesn't I am fine but it is a gamble. Sometimes just surfing the web it will crash also. Have not spent to much time looking into it as I have been busy but I want 11.4 back as I have no problems with that one :) Glad its working for you though.

Aye cheers, just goes to show... what's right for one person isn't for another. You sure it's a driver issue?
