"AMD drivers require a faster CPU" - truth to this?

It used to be an issue but AMD have been working on it in the last 6 Moths, i have had a 290 for the past 18 Moths, i noticed a change in CPU bound games from 15.5, there was a significant jump with 15.7.

I have recently switched to a GTX 970, can't say that i have noticed much of a difference, maybe a small difference.

CPU is an FX-9590.

I would be interested to see the difference, if there is any now.... does anyone have an FX-8350, an AMD GCN GPU and the full version of 3DMark?

Shanks what do you score with your Intel CPU?

Would be great to hear what you think of it, and what performance differences you have seen between the 290 and the 970 on your CPU. I expect there isn't a great deal of difference in the grand scheme of things.

I like the GPU, its cool its quiet its nice. GeForce Experience is also nice, i think AMD could learn a lot from it and everything in it.

I think 6 Moths ago there would have been a significant difference on my CPU but not now, as i said i haven't really noticed much difference.

But TBH i'm really disappointed with Nvidia's Win 10 Drivers, AMD's were far more stable, rock solid in fact.

I'd love to disagree with you, but WOT has just crashed on me again so I'm not sure I can, maybe the new 355.60 that I've just installed will be better. here's hoping. :)

Have you tried World Of Warships? i'm having a lot of fun in that... tho i just got a Back Screen with sound loop :(

I thought this was true also, but to be honest the difference is suppose to be minimal, certainly not one worth making an AMD or NVidia decision over. If it is gaming your worried about, the performance difference from different games favouring either AMD or NVidia in a much bigger way than any difference the driver overhead would make.

On the whole it's nothing to worry about.

I think some A,D fanboys were trying to throw this around and say that the FuryX is CPU bottlenecked or something, that AMD drivers have way higher CPU overhead, but DX12 will come to the rescue and save AMD. I guess it is comforting to find a possible excuse with an immanent cure to explain why your favourite brand of GPUs struggles as certain resolutions.

@OP

Idk who writes that bs, but my asthmatic AMD A6 on the netbook, works fine with the latest Catalyst.

Ok so its still split, this thread is the type i keep finding.

People state how silly it is and a few comments down people start to say just how true it is and there is proof........

The more I read about Nvidia vs AMD cards the more obvious it is how biased people are because they spent cash on X instead of Y.

have you tested it? link please :)

I personally haven't. But there were a lot of tests done with AMD cpu's aswell in guru3d forums when new beta drivers were popping out on almost daily basis. And as 3dmark api scales very linearly with cpu clockspeed. That was quite close what I remember AMD cpu's were getting.

Unfortunately I can't find those posts as they have been buried under many threads, and I don't have time to go through them all.

On my long search for a graphics card I keep finding this as advice from people that AMD cards need a faster CPU and Nvidias are a lot less demanding on the CPU.

I use an i7 920 so my CPU is sort of lacking and had planned to get an r9 380......but this is putting me off.

Is there truth to this and if so would a 960 be a better purchase due to the better Nvidia drivers?

Its definitely true with project cars, because it uses physx that cannot be disabled and on AMD this has to use the CPU.
