AMD Dual Core - what speed needed to beat 3Ghz Single Core?

Itching for an upgrade.... :D

(Current rig in sig).

Obviously, 2GB is on the cards, but that's not going to help everything, just things like FEAR (I don't play BF2).

For those of you with overclocked dual cores, what do you think will beat my CPU in games?

I know I was surprised when Welshtom told me his X2 @ 2.8Ghz beat his single core @ >3Ghz in 3DMark2001 (2001!!!).

Whadya reckon? I'm thinking I'll need 2.8Ghz per core, but the other problem is I'm a tight git when it comes to CPUs, so will the 3800 clock to 2.8Ghz on both cores? (I have high-end custom watercooling).

Thanks guys!

For a non-multi threaded game you're going to need a 3GHz dual core CPU if you want to match (probably beat) a 3GHz single core. There are a lot of variables involved (e.g. how many background tasks), but generally speaking that is the rule.

2.8ghz would be fine i reckon. 2.9ghz maybe!

It makes windows a lot snappier having dual core.

Although i did like my opty at 3.2

Just as NathanE states. There really is no point upgrading your CPU just now unless you are going to be multitasking etc.

i wouldnt think you would need 3ghz on the dualie to match the single core.

i mean the single core would have to do everything, i.e run your AV software, windows services, firewall etc.

on a dualie, you could dedicate one entire core to a single threaded app while the other core takes care of all the background stuff. what that equates to in actual numbers tho i have no idea.

Depends on your idea of faster as the above have said.
My 3800 feels huge amounts faster around Windows (at stock) than by winnie 3000 did at 2.4GHz. The dual core makes a huge difference.
In game you need the same clock speed really.

I wouldn't bother personally, an opty at over 3ghz is plenty fast enough and you'd be better off going for the 2gig RAM if you ask me.

That said, finding a 2gig set capable of doing 234mhz 2-2-2-6 1T timings won't be overly straightforward. Like you I've got some ancient Twinmos although not quite as good (231mhz 2-3-3-6 1T) and that has put me off moving to 2gig just yet.

Nothing wrong with running 2T 4x 512. In real life applications and games the performance drop is tiny. Its only in memory benching that you see a diff. :)

I have been using 4x512 Twinmos Speed Premium (BH-5) at similar speeds.

a couple of things

on 3dmark a [email protected] is the same as a [email protected] on 3dmark 05

and my corsair 2gb will do 233@2,2,2,5 1T if that helps

Thanks dude. Nice rig ;)

Dunno if Corsair will do that in a DFI - I've only heard bad things about the combo. I'm hoping the G.Skill ZX 2-3-2-5 will do 2-2-2-6 with a little coaxing (ie overvolting ) :D

PS - get that '01 score up! Did you use 2k or XP? 2k will be quite a bit faster.

have a look at here
3800 x2 v 165 and intel dual core at stock speeds. with the 165 opty, L2 2m seems to makes a difference in games running at 200mhz less.

i think when intel conroe comes out it will own the 3 ghz opty not sure but i think so we'll have to wait and see i doubt there nothing intel dual core wise at the mo that could even beat it maybe on par with it i duno tbh

i used xp for that, the 01 score was with the cards at stock as well :D

will get higher when i get chance, need better PSU first,

also memory is at 2.6v

i can also do 254@ 2.5,3,2,1 1T, can go to 265 but not stable

also both sets of timings are memtest stable
