AMD equivelant of a GTX680 ?

He said the micro-stutter problems started when he switched to NV. So MS can't have been a problem before that. He could side grade if he wished to reasonably cheaply, he could buy a 2nd hand 7970. At worst he's got another 1GB of VRAM. If he's had MS problems when switching to NV, why would he buy a 780?

Makes no sense.

Ok, the OP has got a 280X and done job. No point carrying this on.

I got the one linked in this thread that costs about £230 I think.

If you google BF3 stuttering 306.97 you will see lots of other nvidia users have suffered this issue with all drivers post 306.97.

Never had any issues on my 680 (well, until it died) and certainly no micro-stutter. Thought it handled Battlefield 3 pretty well actually even at 1440p. Hope the 280X sorts it out though. Let us know how you get one. I think the 280X when overclocked could be great little card.

My personal taste would be the matrix or toxic.

But the one you chose thanks to the link someone posted earlier is brilliant bang for buck. You won't be disappointed. That's a good buy!

You may experience a few minor issues regarding drivers, what I mean is from what I've seen in the past I believe when going from AMD to Nvidia or Nvidia to AMD you experience issues especially if drivers aren't uninstalled so just make sure you have drivers etc all ready and enjoy your new gpu!

Yup tried latest drivers and about ten other previous drivers, bf just hates my 680 or nvidias drivers... Annoying as I love everything else about the card.

Well all the best for your new graphics card, i'm sure you won't be disappointed. A pimped up 7970 for £230 or so is brilliant, giving you a nice price to performance crossfire option in the future should you choose to do so!

May I know your system specs? It's always nice to see what people have. Also don't worry if you get people going on about 'you should've got a 770/780 290/290x' You have got what is best for you, something that is not costing you loads extra.

290X?

I jest :D

HD 7970 / HD 7970 Ghz.

Pointless sidegrade though tbh, better off getting GTX 780 / 290X.

It would be pointless if he said he wanted better performance, he wants a sidegrade not an upgrade, meaning he does not want to spend extra money on extra performance. He sold his 680 so he is getting something of near value to that 680 but better, it's very ideal and cost effective for him. Performance wise he is not really losing out either even if he plays bf3/bf4 there's some good horsepower in his choice :)

I'd be the kind of person who'd spend my lifetime trying to fix the issue - but that's me :p

Hopefully your new card will get you set straight in BF :)

Not to hijack the thread or anything, but I'm looking at getting either the 7970, 280x or 770 at the moment, and was just wondering when you say the 280x is a "pimped up 7970" what benefit does it have over the 7970?

I see people saying the 280x is just a re-branded 7970 but not sure if they mean they are literally the same, or whether the 280x may have a few small improvements.

Sorry bro I probably don't know the full technical details xD but essentially its probably easiest to describe the 280x as a 7970 ghz edition but slightly better apparantly (not by allot) As well as considering price, price is fab! Also with the hype about mantle coming out soon things will surely perform even better.

For someone like me who has a 7970 I can just get a 280x and crossfire it with my 7970 also. So users who have 7xxx series don't have to sell their current cards for the likes of new. I think i've gone abit off track I think idk but I have a habit of big posts LOL

So in summary:
1: It's basically a 7970 Ghz edition but better slightly?
2: Mantle looks promising so getting an amd card would be quite nice
3: VERY good price per performance on the 280x/7970(since price drop)
4: If you currently own a 7970 and don't want to lose out on money juts get 280x or 7970(now that they are cheaper) and xfire them bad boys.

Yeah, well I'm upgrading from a GTX 480, which I absolutely love, but it's time to move on I think :P

With Mantle coming I think it's worth going for the AMD route than Nvidia at the moment from what I can gather, unless there's a particularly amazing deal on the 770 or something.

So I'm just looking at the 280x and 7970 right now and trying to either find some reason that the 280x is the better card, or see which one has a great deal on.

Fair play, I don't think you'll be unhappy with a 770 or 7970 or 290x in all honestly, that's quite the upgrade you'll be getting. 770 is good but personally I will go for the 280x but in my situation I can't xfire as I use a soundcard and wireless pci card :(. We've hijacked this thread hardcore :O

ok so I upgraded to windows 8.1 from windows 7 last night and now my GTX680 seems to now work considerably better with BF4, I still get a tiny bit of stutter now and then but its generally smooth now bar very hectic situations.

however the R9 280x shows up in about an hour, im thinking I should compare them... other than just trying them and looking at fraps to compare is there any way I can get some kind of overall performance statistics from them so I can assess better whats got a better average fps or whatever.

I'm interested to know the results of your testing since I am in the same position as you.

GTX 680 MSI Lightning and considering another card.

The lag you describe in BF3/4 will be down to your CPU, have you unparked your CPU cores?

I've just done it today and it made a world of difference.

I am interested to know this. They are updating servers and I hear that these were responsible for creating stutter for those of us who were getting it (prior to updating) on BF4.
