is it worth it ?

Recently purchased a Freesync monitor and I have a gtx 1060 6gb jet stream.

Just wondering if it’s worth taking advantage of the Freesync and swapping my gtx 1060 with a amd 580 .

The reason why I didn’t buy a g sync monitor was because the different in price was double .

Games I play are gta 5, cs go , tomb raider , project cars 2.

I couldn't game without it now. Once you try it you will always want this tech be it Freesync or Gsync.

Couple things to ask yourself
Does Screen tear do your head in?
Do you game with Vsync enabled to remove screen tear? If so you have the downside of extra input lag and choppy motion "You will notice this more when you try Freesync"

I will say this though because they is a lot of miss information around about these techs
Will it make 30fps feel like 60fps -- NO
Low FPS still has higher frame latency they is just nothing you can do to change that 30fps is still 33ms lag

I tried a 1060 & a 1080 with my Freesync monitor last year. I ran games with v-sync off & fast sync on & everything seemed fine. No moans to report :D

In hindsight I wouldn't bother changing brands even though I did do it myself.

Fastsync only works if you have the Frame rate over the max refresh rate though. Its a great for that alone, below you still have tearing to put up with.

I have had one for a couple of years, i have a GTX 1070 now but i did use its Free-Sync function when i ran an R9 290 with it, Free-Sync is great and there is no substitute for it, is it worth swapping your 1060 for an RX 580 to enjoy it? maybe, its a drastic thing to do.

Alternatively nVidia, and AMD actually... has something that is between V-Sync and Free-Sync / G-Sync, Fast Sync for nVidia or Enhanced Sync for AMD, it cuts down on Screen Tearing without the input lag of V-Sync, you could try that, i use it all the time tho it doesn't work in Vulkan games.

This is true but tearing still isn't bad when its with-in the monitors refresh-rate.

The RX580 is a better card than the GTX1060 but it's not that much better. Freesync is a nice experience so you get a little extra value, but I'm not sure I'd be upgrading from a GTX1060 to RX580 unless the cost was minimal.

If it is not going to cost you much moving from 1060 to 580 then yes do it. 580 is faster card also.

Thanks for the replies .

I changed my gtx 1060 for an rx 580 and I must say it’s a very good card.

I only played cs go with it and have noticed a difference but it’s not a massive improvement.

I will report back I play some games.

If you are playing csgo then you don't want to care about freesync. Most competetive players turn down settings to get 200+fps because it gives them an advantage in game.

I tried playing csgo with gsync and if anything it made things worse.

The 1060 is more on par with the 480 (480 is actually probably better with driver updates) but lacks the extra vram. The 580 is quicker.

Personally I'm not a big fan of either as I don't like the way it lowers the refresh to match the FPS. I prefer it consistent. Both seem to have a slight effect on image quality as well as it adds what looks like a slight stripling effect to moving images sometimes.
