AMD FX 6350 Fan Speed / Noise

Morning folks.
I have just put together a new build consisting of the an AMD FX 6350 and an MSI 970A-G46 board and am a little confused by the CPU fan and temps?

I have updated the BIOS to the latest version (2.5) but from the first boot the CPU temp in the BIOS is sitting anywhere between 40 - 60 degrees at idle and the fan is around 5800 RPM which is really loud. There is no over clock on it at all and I have checked that the heatsink is seated properly and have re done the paste with some Arctic 5 but it still seems the same.

I have also downloaded Core Temp and that is showing the idle temp around 26 - 36 degrees but the fan is still spinning up and down like nobody's business Nd is really loud!

Does anyone have any ideas? Possible mobo RMA?

Thanks

How's the airflow, if any, in your case?

The bios temps will always be a bit higher due to some load in bios, but still, i'd say 60 is on the high side.

The temp in windows sounds fine. You might wanna try adjusting the fan settings if you feel its loud. Whats the temps like under load in windows?

Check the load temps before making any decisions, stock fans are crap.

I would presume its a stock cooler? if this is the case then well its horrible. It does a poor job at cooling and if your are suffering from a bad case of airflow(pun intended) well its what i would call critical.

If you dont have that much to spend on a cooler the Cooler Master 212 Evo would be a good fit. Otherwise i would highly recommend the Corsair hydro 100i but buy a pair of Noctua NF-F12 PWM 120mm fans to replace the standard with cause otherwise it can get rather noisy. The quiet profile isnt that bad though.

Idle temps shouldn't vary by 20 degrees. Clearly you're doing something wrong or looking at the wrong temps :).

Try moving back to previous BIOS see if it changes anything. Is really just BIOS update all you've done?

Yes it is a the stock cooler. I will be getting some case fans today but these temps are with the sides of the case off.

I was also getting exactly the same performance on the older version BIOS that the board shipped with so not sure there is any worth in downgrading that.

If I am not overclocking the CPU then surely I shouldn't have to replace the stock cooler? I understand that it's not going to give the performance of the after market coolers but surely it should still be up to the job?

I'm going to fire up the MSI Control Centre to see what that is reporting as I believe that there is some fan control options in there. Not too keen on relying on software to perform this basic task though...

Download HWmonitor to check the temps.

You are right, the stock cooler is enough without any overclocks, but just enough. Which means, that awesome noise you are probably hearing while reading this, and higher-than-normal temperatures all around. But it is enough to keep the CPU running for the presumed lifetime or warranty period of 3 years at least.

It all comes down to preference in the end. For quietness, you need to pay more for a proper cooler and case airflow.

Check your load temps, those will tell you whether the problem is actually a "real" problem (throttling etc), or just a noise problem.

Ok. I left the machine off over night and the temps this morning and fan speed seem to be good.

I've got hardware monitor installed and was seeing temps of 25 - 32 idle with 20% fan speed at 1600Rpm. Just running prime95 blend test now and the temp is maxing at 50 degrees with 98% fan speed of 6239rpm.

Stopped the load test and temps have dropped back down to 19 degrees at 24% fan 2879 rpm.

This looks good to me?

Yeah nothing wrong with either the temps or rpms for a stock cooler.

Edit: Though.. 19c? Are you living in a Freezer? Seems something weird going on with those sensors.

What are the voltages of the cpu at idle and at full load?
If not overclocking you can undervolt.
