AMD head of Computing and Graphics steps down

Nothing like endorsing your own products is there :D That's when you know they are crap, when even the employees wont use them :p

He does use AMD CPU's.

Nothing unusual with this, AMD have been flat for while and chucking out deadwood and bringing in fresh blood might be what AMD needs (it could really do with a master marketing expert tbh) to drive growth.

The people moving on are all from areas that AMD have been particularly struggling.

Their marketing is poor and they appear to not have a single desktop processor appearing this year. Execs from departments responsible, gone.

As mentioned above, big companies replace staff at the top if they aren't meeting performance targets. It can make national news if it's somewhere like Tesco but it doesn't generally mean the company is in trouble.

Of course the usual suspects will be rubbing hands at the thought of a major player going under so they can get properly bummed by nvidia and intel when their only competition is removed.

*pulls pin*
*throws* Who's this competition your talking about? I thought this was about AMD
*runs*

Let's face it, intel waaay undercharge for their CPUs, and nV too with their GPUs. They would be good value at literally 3x the price.

A CPU for £600 is pretty good value when you think about it. And if you buy a GPU for less than £1k you're practically stealing it.

We're all enthusiasts here, and naturally money is no object. I know I personally have nothing better to do than throw money at my favourite mega-corps who I am unreasonably attached to for no good reason :D

Exactly. This Subsection is full of fully grown children it would seem. It's a ******* graphics card for crying out loud. Either buy a red one or a green one, that choice is down to the end user.

A few years back around the time of the ATi X1950 XT cards, this forum had the same issues, bickering and fanboyism galore, today it seems much worse, except back then you could actually come into this section and read about graphics cards, rather than some bickering children arguing over the colour of their toys and how much power they use.

It's already been happening, Intel and NVidia haven't cared about AMD's prices for a long time and have been pricing their products however they wish.

FX8350 is AMD's equivalent to 4770K yet Intel charge nearly 100% more.

290X is AMD's equivalent to GTX980 yet NVidia charge nearly 100% more.

AMD are doing such a brilliant job in driving Intel's/NVidia's prices down. lol

If Amd did go down Nvidia fanboy's should start saving now as instead of £500+ for full fat cards they will be paying even more. That or wait a year or two for them to go down to half normal price's.

What I find more amusing are the ones getting all up in arms about what people are saying, all the comments I have read are obviously tongue in cheek as no one really believes AMD are going under.

I'd say nvidia charge a premium that people seem willing to pay but I'd not go so far as to say they don't care about AMD's prices. If the 390x comes out at 30% quicker than a 980 and at £350, watch those prices tumble and watch how quickly they squirt out a 980ti at £500, rather than at £699

Spot on, been a few similar threads, you would think people would learn not to bite every time.

Whilst that's true it still highlights the fact that NVidia (and Intel) are so far ahead of AMD that they're able to sell mid range parts at premium rates and hold back their 'latest and greatest' technology in reserve should AMD actually release something decent.

AMD have fallen so far behind that we're already suffering the effects of a lack of competition, so if they were to go under (unlikely but possible) the changes in prices and 'holding back' of technology (by Intel/NVidia) wouldn't be as drastic as people claim, as we've already been experiencing it.

No, but it shows that they are still in crisis mode and are likely going to have a big internal restructure and potential downsizing.

i wouldn't like to own AMD shares right now, or be an AMD employee, but it isn't necessary bad news. Companies sometimes need a slid kick up the backside to become competitive again. AMD's problem at the moment is that they are trying to chase many tales but have less r&D money to spend at each group. It is hard to be competitive at CPUs if you don't match Intel R&D, it is hard to be competitive with Nvidia if you don't match R&D. AMD need to concentrate their more limited resources at fewer more core technologies that they are very competitive at, that may very well mean increased GPU R&D budget and going after a big share of Nvidia compute market hile letting Intel grab more desktop CPU market share.

Hopefully AMD can reverse the trend.

I don't know much about these things but I do think AMD would do well if they were taken over by a company like Samsung who can put large amounts of money into making the CPU side more competitive with intel.

Money doesn't solve everything. They had money before they completely cut back on their manufacturing process and stopped hand crafting their CPU design after Athlon 64. Bad people make bad decisions with or without the dollar to back it up

Agreed the Athlon 64 was a fantastic chip, which I owned and super quick for its time but AMD sat back and rested on their laurels. It has been a downhill spiral since then in truth and allowed Intel to take a massive lead and deservedly so.
