AMD head of Computing and Graphics steps down

How many times must we hear the same old dribble about AMD being doomed and going out of business? Every Year the same old nonsense.
I suppose we're still waiting for Microsoft to die after Bill Gates quit right..

Can't the guy get a new job if he wants to?

IMO the best thing for AMD would be to sell ATi and use the money to bolster CPU development (I hear Samsung are looking to get into GPU). Buying ATi was the worst business decision AMD ever made, they virtually bankrupted themselves doing it and the austerity it caused ruined their CPU development and allowed Intel to gain the lead the have today, if AMD had never bought ATi they would be on par with or beating Intel right now.

It wasn't that bad at first when the GPU division was being hammered by the competition and the CPU division was bankrolling it, then a blessing when the CPU division was being hammered by the competition and the GPU division was bankrolling it (though the CPU division would never have been in trouble if they hadn't spent so much acquiring a bankrupt GPU company), but now both divisions are being hammered by the competition and that's very bad as they are basically caught dead in the water with Intel/Nvidia firing from both sides.

Microsoft haven't done anything right in years (DX12 aside for now).
They have no idea what they're doing with their tablet movement. Windows RT's practically dead (Which is an absolute waste). Microsoft would rather spend 2 billion on the Minecraft franchise than invest into their lacklustre mobile eco system.

But they are not dying. Not even close.

their share price is lower now than last jan, they really need to pull something out the hat soon.

Their overall financial position is better however* and crucially they have 3rd party confidence.

Couple of years back it wasn't nonsense at all - I typed out a very long post on the financial side of it but no one really wants to read that - short version is they were in a precarious position going into the time of year when real money had to be found and/or obligations deferred by agreement on the back of a poor previous quarter and 3rd party confidence in the company was so low that several key players went on record explicitly stating that they would not risk their own companies with the global economic problems to prop AMD up if it came to it. 90% of companies I've seen in a similar position do go under (even big ones) - AMD has several times survived situations which would have levelled most companies however. I can't see their imminent demise this time around however as while not great they have a bit of a buffer financially (should it come to it in a worst case scenario).

* Not quite as good as I'd thought when I made the previous post as the previous statements I'd looked at were looking much stronger than the latest ones I've looked up since posting.

AMD GPU division is not being "hammered", the lead times between releases are what they are in this business. If they started shouting about what they had in store people would no doubt use that against them somehow.
