Just in the process of getting MSI Afterburner now and taking a look around it. Windows updates are delaying me!

I do actually remembering using this for a fan profile before many GPU's ago.

Not really sure where to start with the OC settings though, haha. :(

Well im going to bed shortly but i will give you a few tips to start with before i go. :)

Use this to test your overclocks

Run standard settings - Full screen, 1080p, quality Ultra, AAx4 etc. Load it up and when it starts running press F9 to begin benching. Keep going until you reach the final screen and get a score. Then quit and head back to afterburner to tweak.

Start at stock voltage and at stock clocks. Focus on the core first. Put the fan speed up to 100% or as loud as you can tolerate. You don't want temps holding you back.

Add 25mhz onto the core from the stock clock and run the benchmark. If you complete the benchmark and get your score without any problems exit and then bump the core another 25mhz and run the test again.

Keep doing that until you get a crash, black scree, error, hang, driver reset message etc. When that happens restart your pc. Bump the voltage one notch and run the test again. Voltage goes up in 6/7 digits. So if your stock voltage is 1.113 the next voltage bump would be 1.119.

Keep adding more clock speed and volts until you reach a limit you're happy with. Once you reach your limt you can focus on the memory.

Do the same with the memory. Once you notice a crash, error or you get a worse benchmark score you can either increase memory voltage or back clock 25mhz and leave it there.

25mhz is a bit of a jump, but it reduces the time spent finding your limits. You can always fine tune more precisely once you have a better grasp of things.

Thanks mate, had to check the settings unlock voltage control and monitoring and it seems I can adjust it now. :)

I know you said to put my GPU fan up to 100%, is this just whilst I'm overclocking and then I can set a fan profile after? Just wondering because 100% fan would drive me crazy I think. :D

If you followed the guide correctly in the OP it shows you how to unlock voltage. ;)

Just put it as loud as you can tolerate for now. You can always lower it later. Whilst you find your maximum clocks you want to keeps temps as low as possible as once you start heavily over clocking the gpu needs to be kept cooler to remain stable. Once you're all set you can experiment with lowering the speed a bit.
 
I set the coreclock to 885Mhz in MSI, saved the profile, loaded the profile, but benchmark is only reporting the clock as 860mhz still...

Do you have any other overclocking apps installed? Have you unlocked or messed about with overdrive in CCC? Try restarting your pc and creating and applying the profile overclock in afterburner. Once you change the core clock, just hit apply and it should save.
 
I'm currently at 960/1200 with no issues so far. Stepped up by 25Mhz 4 times. The benchmark score has increased each time. :)

1010/1200 at the moment. At the end of that bench, GPU temp was 57C. How much can the 7850 2GB get up to before damage? :)

Hmm, trying to step coreclock up to 1060 now however it won't allow it. It'll only go up to 1050 and no more. Does this mean that's all my cards capable of? :(

Tick extend official over clocking limits, restart your pc. Now you should be able to push the core much higher.

Try and keep temps below 70-75c.
 
Ok, first issue.

1110/1200 was fine.

Stepped up to 1135/1200 - BSOD as soon as I entered into Unigine. So now I need to step voltage up by 7 digits. :)

Whack it up two notches seeing as it gave you a BSOD. That's pretty extreme, typically you'd just get a driver reset, black screen or such.

I know you stated in your other reply to keep upping the coreclock speed to a limit I'm happy with but as I'm a total newb, I'm really not sure what sort of number I should be aiming for?

Good to hear.

Well 1200 seems to be the ideal core clock on Graphics Core Next. What was your stock clock? Sounds like your card is over clocking well as it is. Go as far as you can while keeping temps in check. Remember that to be fully game stable (bf3, sleeping dogs, farcry 3,m crysis 3) will typically require another notch of voltage or so compared to benchmark stable.

Rinse and repeat. Add more voltage till it becomes stable. Or call it a good game and start testing games. Remember you might need more voltage to be game stable.

Sorry to keep asking - I upped voltage to 1165 and got another bsod. Will it be safe to notch it up again to 1172? Not really sure how far it's safe to push voltage...

What's your stock voltage?

Btw you do have the power meter at +20% in afterburner right?

So it applies the clock ok but not the voltage? That's a strange one. Are you using the latest beta 7 afterburner?

Voltage is safe all the way upto 1.25v for 24/7 usage, i wouldn't go over that for 24/7 some people may suggest higher but thats up to you.

If he has a high asic low voltage card though that limit will come down some. 1.2v should be on the safe side.
 
Stock voltage appears to be 1138 and I'm damn sure I set the power meter to 20% but It obviously didn't save. Agh. I'm such an idiot. With not having that at 20%, is it likely I've damaged the card or anything?

Up to 1.25v should be ok then. 1.2v if you want to play it safe.

It means your overclocks might need re tweaking thats for sure. YOu won't have damaged the card though so don't worry but that could explain the BSOD messages. :D

What happened was you exceeded the TDP limit for the card. The power slider just increases that limit. What would have been happening was your card was down clocking to try and stay within the limits and that causes the BSOD.
 
Haha, I've made a right hash of this so far! To be fair though I've never done anything like this before but it certainly goes to show that you need to make sure you read everything properly and take your time.

So, I reset the voltage back to stock and now Power Limit % is saved at 20%.

The last stable clock was 1085/1200 with stock voltage. Should I just start from there again and work my way up as usual?
