Ever since the good old days when AMD were the king of the overclocking scene (AXIA any one?) i have been totally one sided with computing. I have to say though from what i have been reading the new Conroe chips are something to be desired.

So quite simply, will i be impressed if i upgrade from the spec in my sig to this:

Intel Core 2 DUO LGA775 E6600 2.40GHz Retail / Abit AB9 Pro / 2GB GeIL PC2-6400C4 DDR2 Dual Channel Kit - Bundle

Graphics to be upgraded when crysis is released ;)
Cheers

holy hell thats pretty interesting chart, for all people have been shouting about conroe thats pretty close between K8 and the intel processors, any AMD processors running at 2.4Ghz is almost identical to there conroe counterpart at 2.13Ghz, but intel have it with overclocking, AMD really need this 65nm revision to do wonders for there clocking

Awsome guide on Toms Hardware, cheers guys this has helped me make up my mind. Time for AMD to go the way of old Yella....

If you have a heavily overclocked AMD single core you will notice little difference in switching to a stock C2D in single threaded tasks. However, single threaded or not once you start to overclock the C2D it literally wipes the floor with any AMD cpu.

indeed, because on average K8 is equal performance wise (2.4Ghz) to conroe clocked at around 2.1Ghz, so 300mhz slower and slightly superior performance, for about 40 pound less, can't go wrong really, and it will improve dramatically as you ramp up the clock speed :)

I not sure myself. I am running a Venice 3000 and 2.7GHZ, with a gig of ram. Thinking of going with a conroe E6300 with 2gigs of ram... I mostly do Photoshop and website work, but am considering working on video too... trying to deicde if the performance boost will be big enough :/

Hmm, no Opterons on there, which could i select as the closest match to my Opty 146 @ 2.6Ghz ?

:)

I'd be wary using that tomshardware chart as an indication to real world performance... I benched my E6600 at stock and overclocked against my friends watercooled and overclocked FX-62 (he wouldn't put it down to stock speeds) and there was no competition really... the conroe even feels faster.

how far can most 2.1ghz intel conroes be O/clocked? if it really is that close between the two @ 2.1vs 2.4 the conroe would have to hit like 3GHZ to be noticebly faster than an AMD when oc'ed?

My 6300 hits 3.08 gig so you would have to touch around 3.4 gig on a AMD to be on same performance and i aint seen one go that high on air, if you got a 6600 you would even hit 3.4+.

no your right it wont go that high, but how much performance would you actually lose by not having it clock that high - 5%? 10%? and thats only in CPU limited scenario's.

i can see the case for upgrading from low spec A64's and Bartons, but im not convinced the cost of swapping from an X2 would be worth it.

Probably for you stick as you are imo, i know a [email protected] is on par with a fx62 but you have goto think is the cost of it all worth it in the long run for you probably not, if somone was building a new rig there would be no other choice than a core2 setup.

indeed, K8 simply won't go that high without some serious cooling, phase or something, not even under water i don't think, i got this to 3.05Ghz before it refused to go any further, it wasn't stable at all either, stayed surprisingly cool mind, so i think theres some architectural issue stopping K8 from clocking higher, it may be that pre-fetch issue that was mentioned, but i have been interesting in a conroe line called E4300, it has 9x multiplier and 800 bus speed, so i think they may clock as well as E6600, same multiplier, same core, its the same chip really, for some 100 pound less :) though im yet to find any reviews or anything on that said processor, same with AMD revision G (though there available for sale on the mainland i hear) im really interested in knowing how far they will clock

ok in order for me to purchase this lovely new system i need to start selling my system so a little help pricing it up would be good ;)

Would it be better if i went for the E6300? i only ever use my pc for gaming and web browsing but i am wanting a cpu that will allow me to play alan wake and crysis at a reasonable res/detail setting. I can afford the E6600 but am moving into my new flat in jan and the misses would kill me if i spend more than i need to :p

Cheers
