For those unaware, at Siggraph 2023, NVIDIA presented their Neural Texture Compression (NTC) solution. This AI-powered compression reduces texture sizes while keeping their quality high. NVIDIA claimed back then that this new format is better than the old AVIF and JPEG XL formats.


And earlier today, AMD announced its plans to reveal its own Neural Texture Block Compression at EGSR2024. As with NVIDIA, AMD will be using neural networks to compress textures.

AMD promises that this technology will be easy to implement as it uses unchanged runtime execution. However, there is no word on when – and if – video-games will take advantage of it.


For what it’s worth, NVIDIA’s Neural Texture Compression hasn’t been used in any game. However, as we’ve noted in a previous article, NVIDIA may find a way to implement this tech in future versions of DLSS. Or at least that’s what NVIDIA’s CEO Jensen Huang hinted at.


There is nothing to add at this point about this new texture compression solution. To be honest, I expect it to be as good as NVIDIA’s solution. That will certainly be a good thing. But, since there aren’t any games that can benefit from either of them, they are – at least for now – a “nothing-burger” for most of us.

Does this give more FPS in cyberpunk ?

On topic, no one is using this tech so it's moot.

From my understanding it's suppose to help with download size so it's not even a local machine improvement for performance as opposed to enterprise implementation.

Otherwise if it's an excuse for lower vram, it's but a bad one

No one may be using this tech. but that doesn't mean it won't be in the future, same as with any tech. And yes it may not even be used for games performance benefits outside of just size of downloads, although with the sounds of dlss 4, it might be used during game, hard to know yet.

It's good that amd have got something now though as opposed to waiting a year or so after nvidia have got their tech. established as it means nvidias will be less lucrative since they don't have the "first to market" premium.

This tech is more for enterprise, this has so little to do with consumers.

AMD /xilinx have an amazing av1 acceleration card that Nvidia doesn't have a competitive card with. I don't see people here rave about it.

It could be applied to games in some form too. Nvidia are looking at it for gaming pov too iirc.

Games rarely make effective use of DDS/S3TC never mind anything more advanced, though a couple of games use their own form of this.

Personally would rather see improvements to DDS and texture streaming features.

I doubt AMD even needs such comrpession for gaming since most of their gpu's have plenty of VRAM. It's more useful in enterprise where a huge amount of VRAM can be used when rendering scenes/models, etc.

You can tell it's the summer when small sites make clickbait titles.Even they admit Nvidia hasn't even implemented it, so AMD is playing catchup to a feature nobody is using which will probably work best on unreleased next generation cards.

It's pre-release features wars now. This is why lack of puddles and too much heat is bad for Gamers.

amd is betting on a follower's strategy, but their market share is too small, the strategy's been a failure

regarding the feature, well we need some benchmarks so as to be able to judge its readiness for realtime graphics

amd just price fix with their relative nvidia they dont care about competing or market share in the gpu space

I'm not very familiar with the tech but perhaps it requires devs to include an additional set of textures for Nvidia cards alongside the standard ones that work for all cards.
