AMD Kabini/Jaguar official review thread

room to head downaward in the race to the bottom. Intel may have a bucket of money but are playing catchup with both arm and amd (below 5w for arm , and belw 25w for amd)

The rechreport review was a good read, a bit more feature detail than some of the others about its internal machinations.

I'm not one who values actual CPU performance in ultrabooks / netbooks / tablets. The performance needs to be 'good enough'. I've used, and continue to use a [email protected] notebook, and it still qualifies. I've used an old atom netbook (N510), and that was definitely lacking. The race to the bottom is not a bad thing in my book. In a netbook / ultrabook situation, if you can reduce the power consumption, improve compactness and cooling, but not at the expense of usability and crippling CPU performance, then all the better.

I really don't know what to make of that.

All I know is Jaguar is at least 20% faster than Bobcat at slightly lower clocks and less power consumption.

Bobcat was fairly decent to start with, its a huge improvement and they are pretty impressive numbers in their own right.

I hope we will see the same improvements on the Desktop parts.

Kaveri doesn't get GDDR5 anymore

Earlier this year we reported about Kaveri also getting a GDDR5 interface, a rather interesting proposition but imaginable considering AMD integrated the same memory technology into the silicon for Sony's Playstation 4. A newer version of the NDA documents seen by us no longer include the references to a GDDR5 interface. The document detailing the GDDR5 interface was from last year, while the newer one we have seen is only a few months old. It seems AMDs engineers for some reason dropped GDDR5 in Kaveri. The possibility of models with 3 compute units (i.e. 6 cores) was removed as well. This is also reflected in the roadmap.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's bad news right?

Looks that way to me, unless they have something else in mind it will be bottlenecked by having to use system RAM.

Is this another example of AMD dragging its heels? how do you use Twitter? I want to have a word with Roy@AMD

looks like they might be going to MS route? with on die edram? ala xbox one?

While that would be awesome from a technology standpoint, eDRAM is hella expensive. A reasonable amount of eDRAM would be more expensive than throwing a few GDDR5 chips on a piece of PCB I'd wager. Remember, PCs don't have the closed box advantage of consoles, so 64/128MB of eDRAM wouldn't be enough, all IMO of course
