Update – Thanks to our German reader, we now know that AMD was using the Oculus Rift Virtual Reality set to demonstrated their Kaveri APU graphics capabilities.

AMD has officially confirmed that their fourth generation Kaveri APU would be headed to desktop PCs in 2013. It was previously reported that Kaveri APUs might have been postponed till 2014 however the desktop APUs arrive officially in 2013.

Martini can you explain the AMD boards as I am really confused regarding the AM2/3 sockets. last time I built one of these systems was Socket A and using pencils.

Wrong thread to do it lol.
But I'm not sure what you're confused at?
Currently AMD have two sockets that are selling.

FM2 (Which came out last year)
And AM3+ (Which came out mid 2011)

AMD's APU's use the FM socket, AMD's "high end" use the AM socket.

Kaveri is coming out on a new socket, FM2+ (So, AMD's killing off FM2)

AM3+ is "meant" to be receiving a CPU after the current crop of Piledriver chips ; Steamroller in an 8 core package (And 6 and 4), the Steamroller cores are the same used in Kaveri.

Some people (Myself included) are of that opinion that AM3+ will be getting killed off, and replaced with another socket for the 8 core Steamrollers, as the base spec of AM3+ is in ways inferior to that of FM2+ (Which, doesn't make a great deal of sense to launch what could be a very impressive CPU)

AM3+ currently takes the FX line (X1XXX and X3XX and 9XXX) and also Phenom II's (AM3, not the AM2+ ones)

Right that's much clearer to interpret, so it's waiting to see then if the next steamroller is moving to a new socket or not before investing.

Yeah I get what you mean now regarding the 'high end' and also having FM2 being newer. Strange so gonna take a back seat but close eye on that. Thanks guys!

FM2+ boards are starting to appear on American retail websites now, can't be long until they also appear in the UK.

They are already appearing on pre-order and the A88X motherboards look pretty decently priced too!

This one looks like it will be under £60:

Very cool

I hope someone is making a mini ITX board, one of these would make a great replacement for my old gaming laptop; small enough to easily chuck in the car and take to LANs, much cheaper than a dedicated gaming laptop and upgradeable once performance starts to lag a little.

Looks more like their not-great FM2 A75 ITX board than their much-better A85x itx unit. But hopefully they've learned their lessons from that one.

MSI are the only one of the big-4 not to show their FM2+ hand. I'm hopeful they'll have an itx option. Asus and Giga have drawn a blank :(

Maybe Something Incorrect's AMD boards have been worthless quality wise for a while, no great loss IMO

A little harsh. Their budget AM3+ boards were a bit undercooked, but I've not heard any complaints about their 990fx units or any of the FM2 boards. Their FM2 itx was supposedly very solid, if not very exciting.

The mini-ITX motherboard is based on this FM2 one it seems:

http://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/FM2A85X-ITX/?cat=Specifications

It uses a 4+2 phase VRM.

It has a totally different VRM section to the one you are thinking about:

http://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/FM2A75M-ITX/

It uses a 3+1 phase VRM.

I know a mate who uses the A85 one and so far it has been fine, and it does not seem to have widely reported issues like the A75 one.

You're right. It looks almost exactly like the A85x one! I think memory was playing tricks on me

Sadly my aversion to MSI stems from a rather large (and expensive) pile of dead-brefor-it's-time MSI equpment, motherboards, laptops and GPUs, both private (mine and families) and business.

This. A dead 939 AMD board after 6 months & a fussy with PSU's HD7850 (I still have & rarely use) convinced me not to buy MSI in the future.
