AMD Linux Driver (XOrg 1.17)

Hello all,

This is probably directed at AMDMatt, but any information would be appreciated.

Is there any news on when an XOrg 1.17 compatible catalyst driver will be available from AMD ? Ubuntu 15.04 has a "pre release driver" but that doest help any other distros like Arch.

In fact the latest official driver is the Omega one ..... kind of seems silly that AMD gloss over Linux as a whole in respects to drivers looking at the big push for Linux games (they should focus on all Linux development ... not just Ubuntu)

Regards,

Apache14

Thats a shame, would be nice to know.

I mean i love my R9 290 (amazing card all round) but if i im looking more and more at switching to a GTX 970 for better linux drivers :/

Same boat, have a 290x. Cant fault it other than the fact its under a 750ti performance under *nix :(

The open sorce drivers are quite good now on the R2 290's but still need catalyst for some steam games to work correctly.

Seems a little unfair that Ubuntu got a pre reease driver that works with Xorg 1.17, it kind of shuns all of the other linux distros.

Seems as tho AMD think suporting Ubuntu == Supporting linux, it does not :(

[EDIT]

So AMDMatt as out comminuty contact (or whatever the official title is) can you please get some information on this ? :D

Not tried the oss drivers for a good while tbh, Though I know that for a good few of the games on steam its just not ready yet.

Annoys me to with the driver, they got the 15.4 beta driver. I cant stand *buntu, mint's not bad but not keen on debian based tbh.

Don't see why it's just ubuntu that got it, even their own driver notes state RedHat + a few others that's actually supported by them.

The oss drivers are really worth a look if you are not playing games. Things like gnome, xbmc and chromium are smooth and hw video decoding works flawless now.

But yeah not really good enough for gaming yet.

I didnt notice the XOrg 1.17+ issue untill i tried moving my linux setup to Arch (really nice distro for bleeding edge stuff), i really dont see why this driver is Ubuntu only and not a normal bete release.... (i have seen report of people trying to use an extracted driver from Ubuntu on Arch with ver bad results :( )

Ohh well ill just have reboot between CyanogenMod deveoping and KSP >.<

I'm always surprised how many people think linux is awesome cause open source then don't run the open source drivers. It'd be nice if the proprietary ones were better sure, but I'd have thought the oss ones would be the default road.

@pete910

The following shows that the oss drivers are good enough for some games ...

Shame some like bioshock need OpenGL level higher than what these support :(

I've seen them, not overly keen on Phoronix tbf. If it ain't ubuntu he ain't generally interested. His testing methods are shall we say weird. I mean why is he still using warsaw, TFT2 ect as a benchmarks. We have things like civ5, Metro, BL2 and TPS, dying light... You see what I'm getting at.

He still uses FPS numbers on the Heaven/valley benchmarks instead of the actual score that's stated when run.

Sorry rant over. :o

Trouble is I dont play openareana, TFT2. Am normally playing the games he dont seem to want to test as such. Also the one's that the oss drivers don't like :(

Hoping the new AMDGPU driver works as intended with their new hardware.(if it ever turns up)

Have you tried Dying light with the oss driver Apache14 ?

The oss drivers are default, you have to enable a non free repo on most to use the proprietary drivers. I've personally never understood why the fasination of oss only on *nix. I mean proprietary is useful too. Just seems to be the RMS beards that have a hissy over it.

Wonder if these same people are using oss ECU's in their vehicles and what not ;) Bet they dont walk......

Fair point :)

Both open and proprietary drivers have their place, in an ideal world however the open ones would support most/all the OpenGL extensions as well as the closed ones (so you get a proper choice).

As this is not the case currently, some games will only work on the proprietary drivers.

[EDIT] the main issue with catalyst on linux id its slow update cycle (at the moment you are forced to use older key components). That and they are way slower than the nVidia closed drivers

1) I agree that his test methods are a little wonky ... but then again its one of (or the only) only places that do these Linux benchmarks and comparisons

2) Nope don't think I own Dying light, if its any good ill get it and run some tests :) main think id run is KSP (and bioshock as thats due a re-play)

3) I think the new "50/50" split for the new device drivers is a better way to go, but only time will tell (as always :( )
