AMD M2 or 939?

Any advice on whether I should go for AMD M2 or 939? Need to upgrade my current rig but give myself a little bit of room for future expansion beyond my next build.

AM2 is pants,

Conroe is faster and costs the same.

Of course, no contest there at all.

But AM2 has future potential, and I've got a feeling AM2 will be having the last laugh when K8L hits the streets :D

Anyway, it's Conroe for now. :)

What is this K8L

Is it AMD Quadcore based system or something? If it is only DualCore then i see Kentsfield wiping the floor with AMDs offerings :(

This explains it all:

It's AMD's native quad core solution, and it might wipe the floor with Kentsfield which is just two Conroes slapped together (Pentium D style).

Is K8L coming out on AM2 socket?

Well, that's what the clues seem to suggest.

For example:

Henri Richard from AMD said:
That's not to say we're going to present K8L at Computex – don't get me wrong – but I think that that would be a good time to start to disclose more about the future because one of the strong attributes of our roadmap, both in 2006 and 2007, is socket compatibility. The nice thing we're going to do is to deliver to customers. Whatever improvements K8L will provide, they will be applicable to some of the sockets we will be introducing. Therefore, there's a certain logic, to my mind, in disclosing more at that time.

And:
http://techreport.com/onearticle.x/9719 Again, links to Henri Richard

The first K8L chips will be code-named Brisbane, based on AMD's new 65nm process, and should be compatible with the upcoming Socket AM2.

Also think of it from a logical point of view. Why would AMD even bother with AM2 if it had no future intentions of using it. AM2 is like a sleeping socket - at the moment the offerings are not so great but the future potential is certainly there.

I mean 'dead' in the sense that there are no future upgrade paths - i.e. dead end. Production of 939 has also ceased. Nor does its performance hold up to Conroe, so it's safe so say its days are numbered :)

Yeah but if buying a new system then you wouldn't choose a discontiued line.

I would get.

6300
DS3
Geil DDR 2

Have that and destroy AM2 into the bargain. :D

if you want a new system there is no contest, but if you dont mind
second hand, you can pick some real cheap bargin amd components,
939 or am2 (like i did :p)

depends on price bracket imo, if you are tight on cash get am2 but you should try and stretch to conroe, if you not on a tight budget, conroe all the way

if very tight on cash like i was have a look at the asrock dual-vsta board its 939 based but also offers a expansion card for ddr2 memory and a am2 cpu the mainboard its self only costs about 44 pounds (card for am2 an ddr2 sold seperate) from here and also has a agp slot as well as pcie slots :) board seems to be a solid performer and stable as me and my dad are both using em in our rigs with 3700 san diegos :)

conroe will be more expensive in the long run. socket AM2 is compatable with socket AM3 chips comming out later and youl have access to the new K8L architechture (which is actually K9 i.e. the next generation of AMD CPU`s) which is a pure quad core CPU unlike intels cost saving idea of simply slapping 2 core2 duo`s on the same die.

plus if you buy AMD youl go to heaven and be surrounded by andrex puppys...

buy Intel = sell your soul and burn in the firey pits of damnation where youl be forced to listen to old Take That tracks with the occasional Des O Connor record thrown in.

At the moment if you are buy new components Conroe>AMD range, there is no contest. Quad core will be fine and dandy but how many dual core apps and games are there at the moment and how may “average” users exploit what power they have in there dual core systems? And remember quad core won’t be sensibly priced until at least 6 months after its release?
