For small shopping loads, the Fiat probably wins. But if you're buying a year's supply of Ginster's slices...well, you might need the Ford

Basically, the answer is "it depends"

And what it depends on is how many cores are needed for the task.
 
^ makes sense, so i guess if the program uses the extra cores they would be better to have ?

More cores and More GHZ, they are all unlocked, so you can overclock them.

for the FX83## i wouldn't spend less than £100 on the Motherboard as its quite power hungry and puts to much strain on weak VRM's when your overclocking

This basically. The settled average for an 8 core model is around 4.4-4.6ghz. Today I wound mine back to 4.4 and really lowered down the volts. I can get it to 4.8ghz stable no problem though but there's not much point on an 8 core CPU.

The hex core (6) usually does 5ghz at around the same volts and temps so you do get more out of them. However, games are moving now to support 8 cores and within a year you'll find that all games support 8 cores (and most importantly the big titles like say, Crysis 4 or Watchdog).

So I would go 8 core and as humbug said don't skimp on a board. IMO you want the Giga 990 UD3 as a minimum. Next step up Sabertooth, top end Crosshair V Formula Z. If you want to start hitting the magic 5ghz or above for a bit of fun you'll want the Sabertooth or CHVFZ.
 
An organised army doing specific tasks each will be far more productive than a small number of universal soldiers. This however depends on what you need to achieve, if you only use your PC for gaming then lots of cores have not made so much difference.
 
The creative suite 5+ are supposed to be more core efficient and for an extra few bucks from the 6 core you can get the 8350. Depending what he is doing, best to go 16gb ram but if its not major then 8gb should be more than fine. I do Web designing with only 8gb and it does me well. However my father is a photographer and before he upgraded to 16gb, 8gb was not enough for what he wanted to do.

I would recommend an Nvidia card too as ps takes good advantage of CUDA enabled GPU's and that too can make a difference..
