hi all
i am about to build a system for a friend and i am going to build an AMD system for first time. graphics are not an issue so integrated is fine (best for the price obviously), a 17'' tft, at least a gb of ram, at least 160gb h/d.

can some of you AMD lovers point me in the right direction for about £600
cheers

Ok the price is a touch over but it is a good system with a fast monitor, good CPU, solid hard disk and a nice DVDRW. If the budget is massively important get 1gb OcUK value Ram instead.

The above spec is very good, though personally i would get the
Samsung SH-W162C 16x16 DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter (Black) (CD-068-SA)
£23.44 Including VAT, instead of the NEC one.

This will also bring price under £600.

off to join the queue in OC now to get some ram heatsinks
takin a flask

:D I know what you mean! If they just decided to have a queue dedicated to sales stuff only, the queue would be much smaller, and would go down so much quicker as well.

It's not all Oc'ers fault though, some of the problems is that they are too helpful - last time I was in there, it took someone about 20 odd minutes to decide which wireless router to buy - they should really have made the decision before entering the shop IMO, instead of taking up valuable staff time that could be better used serving other customers.

today was'nt too bad, but the advice givin is a pain when you are waiting, however that was us once upon a time, clueless that is
some dumbass doing a build apparently smeared the arctic silver all over the pins of their processor thinking that was the way
retorted by the sales staff to the OC queue (not crew)

Well, maybe their politness is their success, and if they became more "efficient", less people would come by? I bet most of the nicknacks can be had cheaper elsewhere if that is the only thing you wanted :D

I don't know about that, OcUK is literally about 3 minutes away from my house, and the only other shops within a 10 miles radius seem to sell only generic brand stuff for twice the price!

for me OC is cheaper cos i dont have to pay p&p, when on the odd occasion (which is rare) i find something cheaper on the net, the price is offset by the p&p, also i can take it back easily if there is a problem.
my wife has just suggested a dedicated advice person, and one just for sales
hmmm dont know about that,
maybe a comedian or a clown, or mime artist entertaining the queue
im exaggerating about the queue being that much of an issue, unless you are in a rush.
you get to learn stuff about the products in the queue

you can usually guarantee that the supplies are vetted well, ie they dont stock crap
one bone of contention, sapphire RMA-appalling

I've just come back from town and a certain computer shop there has now decided to start selling "performance hardware". eg:

AMD X2 4800 = £538
RAM was branded "Hynix" with no mention of timings, not even CAS.

I think I'll be sticking with OcUK :)
