AMD OPTERON QUAD CORE!

I saw this earlier and thought about posting it but for some reason I kept thinking it was week old news.

Either way it's good to see progression in the AMD camp.

Well, it looks like Intel will have the quad core Conroe out well before. Though it's not as elegant a design (in terms of interface between cores) the raw processing power of Intel's cores are significantly ahead of what AMD has to offer, both in terms of clock per clock and outright clock speed.

I still think amd will bring out quad core fx62 or somthing it will blow intel to peaces i would imagine.

How do you work that out? Core 2 Duo blow AM2 FX62 out of the water, two of each strapped together will just double the gap between the two once more.

Sorry but you are wrong.

The intel chips actually do more work, therefore unless Intel really **** up the interface between cores AMD quads will actually still be worse than most core 2 duo's.

You reckon it will be a diffrent socket?

It'll probably come out on AM2 first, but it would make sense if it didn't work properly until used on the K8L (with ddr3) as this is in the pipeline on the same sort of level as this socket.

As usual back t othe fan boy style posts

Dual cores and quad cores will mean nothing to us for a while, we only just starting to see games that can make use (not fully) on dual cores.

Anyway, yes Intel have finaly pulled ahead of the K8.
Its always been like this since the start, one then the other - but overall Intel is massive in comparison to AMD.
Intel spends an enormous amount of money on research and development -- nearly $4bn (£2.2bn) this year -- and billions more has been spent on marketing the company's brand. AMD is worth a mere $5bn in total, a mere fortieth of Intel's net worth, but it has a solid 15 percent of the market. It can't come close to Intel's R&D budget

We all need both AMD and Intel as they both try to push the envelope and out perform each other.

Its all good IMO, finaly we have got both major players working with higher IPC then raw GHz.
I don't consider Quad cores of any immediate interest, to anything but the server market.

Yes mate, tbh for gamers it's borderline whether a dual core is even needed yet.

Encoding and PS then yes 100%
