• Competitor rules

Please remember that any mention of competitors, hinting at competitors or offering to provide details of competitors will result in an account suspension. The full rules can be found under the 'Terms and Rules' link in the bottom right corner of your screen. Just don't mention competitors in any way, shape or form and you'll be OK.

AMD or Intel? >_<

If they ban me, they ban me. Spie pays for the forums so he can allow me to use them or not, but WE ultimately pay Spie.

There is supposedly a no shop talk rule, but that is routinely flouted by the OcUK staff. I've asked for stuff to be added to the catalogue and sometimes it has been, sometimes not. Sometimes I bought it from a competitor anyway and it turned out to be junk, but if I hadn't tried it I couldn't have commented on it with any authority. I've actually posted retractions in the suggestions forum when I've bought stuff and it was very badly made.

These are generally excellent forums for a technical discussion. I've been very distressed by some of the posts recommending stuff people haven't actually tried. I've tried an E6700 ES and an Abit AB9 Pro. I haven't recommended them because the motherboard is flakey and the chip runs hot. No-one else seems to have a hot-running chip so I've assumed mine is unusual. I've also tried all 3 ASRock Conroe compatible motherboards and they are all good. The 945GZ is less so as it only goes to 800FSB without the forthcoming BIOS update.

Lots of the users on these forums are not as well funded as I am and I genuinely don't want to see anyone waste hard-earned money. That's all.

Just a quick question if you don't mind - do either of those Asrock boards you mention support the E6300 out of the box or do they need a BIOS update with another chip in place?

Please excuse the hijack.

The ConroeXFire775 supports all 6xxx (1066FSB) and 4xxx (800FSB) series Conroes out of the box. You don't need a BIOS update or anything like that.

...but not the 775 Twins?

Yes, the 775 TWINS does too, but not the 945GZ - it only supports E4xxx series out of the box.

The 775 TWINS has several issues to do with the RAM only running single channel though. In reality there is so much extra processing power available from any of the E6xxx series, that I doubt you would notice it, but it certainly doesn't benchmark as well in things like SuperPi, the benchies that are memory limited.

If you put the E6700ES in the 945GZ it says it's an E4500, whatever that may be. It still boots up fine though. It just runs at 66% normal speed.

Okeydokey, thanks very much for the info :)

I think I can live with those issues, just to have a board I can put my current DDR400 ram in and an E6300/E6400, then get I can switch to DDR2 at a later point and finally replace the board with something better. It's the only way I can afford Duo core right now and not waste my money in a dead end S939 board and A64.
