ive been looking to upgrade my PC. Im in 2 minds where to stick with AMd or go with Intel. At the mo ive got a AMD x2 and i was looking at the new Intel chips cause they seem to be a lot better than the new AMDs.
Has anyone had any experience with either of these chips and what do you think is worth gettin?

I personally have always used Intel. Its not that I have any problem with AMD it just seems that when I want to upgrade Intel have the better chips!! Theres my 2p worth!!

When answering this then really need to know what looking to use the PC for.

Consensus at the moment seems to be

Gaming

AMD AM3

Encoding

Intel i7

Of course this could change when the i5 systems start launching, however as not out in the real world yet!

If so what is your motherboard make and model? You may be able to drop a newer cpu in it.

If your board can take it you can just grab a AM3 CPU. That would be the best/cheapest option.

The new I7's start ~£200. The top of the line AM3 X4 965 ~£180. They trade blows quite evenly gaming wise, for encoding etc intel wins.

im gonna be changin the m/bo as well cause it doesnt support DDR3. but i just want something that is good for gaming and good for video stuff

For an example, I just got:
Asus M4A785TD-V Evo AMD 785G DDR3 Motherboard
AMD Athlon II X2 Dual Core 240 2.8GHz (Socket AM3)
OCZ Value 2GB (2x1GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz Dual Channel
Coolermaster Elite 335 Case - Black
OcUK Value PS2 Keyboard

That added up to £210 with 21.5% Irish VAT and £20 Shipping. Im getting 9800gtx off a friend, so that should be good for gaming and video's. (I might need more ram though)

yeah AMD soon to be i5 too in that field, for gaming, encoding i7, unless your a paitient person well you know:P

When people say AMD for gaming do they mean better bang for buck or better generally? Say i7 920 @4Ghz vs max Overclocker Phenom II Quad- which would be faster for games? I have always assumed it would be i7, but running stock it would be a 955BE.

At stock they are pretty similar. The i7's clock more (% wise) so you can get more out of them.

Not many games make full use of a quad core so Phenom II's are sufficient (and cheaper) for now, i7 is on the whole a faster CPU though if you can afford to pay the premium.

If you aren't planning on overclocking then PII is probably the better option (for gaming at least).

If it were me I would happily go with either route but maybe lean a little towards AMD since its about the same performance for a little less. However, I would ideally wait for an AM3 mobo that gives you the option of crossfire and sli, that's just me though.

i currently have a AMD x2 5200, Foxcon AM2 board, 4GB DDR2 and an 8600GT this all needs upgrading. im gonna be getting pretty much whole new setup. Looking to get ATI 4850 and a new board that can run DDR2 and 3 but im not sure what CPU to get cause Ive read that the AMDs are pap and that im best off gettin an Intel but they cost so much. I dont really want to spend more than £200 on a board and CPU.
