I am in the lucky position of being able to spend around £200 on a processor and motherboard for a new pc I am building. I have a Radeon 4850 Graphics card.
What combination would you recommend and why if I want to build a fast pc (for games and work which is mostly office apps)

AMD Phenom II 720 and a decent motherboard (AM2+ or AM3 depending on if the ram you have is DDR2 or DDR3) would be my recommendation! However, Intel have some new chips out on th 8th sept and you may aswell wait now. They may well shake up the market a bit and give you some new options/lower prices on current tech.

In the title, "AMD or Intel", thats basically asking for a big rant/fight. But for now, most people accept AMD as the budget and Intel as high end. Id recommend my motherboard, phenom II 550 and ddr3 ram, im not good with recommending ram so u might want to look that up.

Phenom II X2 550 or Phenom II X3 720 with a decent AM2+ or AM3 board, depending on if you want to go DDR2/3, will be far cheaper and offer similair performance of the Intel equivalent.

Agree with luke and mtbs advice wait until the 8th or id get a dual core 550 good chance to unlock to a quad. I believe the G Skill ripjaw ram is good if you need ddr3.
