The age old AMD or Intel question.

What's the latest?
What gives the most bang for buck?

I have been swaying towards a AMD 6-core phenom, convince me if I am right or wrong.

intel have newer chips out at the moment than amd, amd are due to release theirs sometime this year.
if you go amd, make sure you get an AM3+ motherboard to allow future upgrades.

It really does depend on what you would use your computer for.
Leisure, Gaming or Productivity?

For gaming, there are 3 key price points as far as I can tell:

£60: AMD Athlon II X3
£90: AMD Phenom II X4 / Intel Core i3-2300 [depends if your games use 3+ threads effectively or not]
£160: Intel Core i5-2500K

There doesn't seem to be any great option between the latter two price points - all of Intel's offerings are locked and AMD's offerings are all hex-cores, which barely any games will take advantage of over the Phenom II X4 quad-cores.

Intel CPU's seem to be the most powerful at the moment, but that's not to say the AMD ones are lacking in any way (I myself have a Phenom II quad that I absolutely love).

I think the Phenom II price to performance ratio is excellent, and mine easily handles everything I need it to (mainly gaming, blu-ray playback, website & graphic design work and photo editing).

I agree with getting a motherboard supporting AM3+ if you go the AMD route. That way you are covered when the newer CPU's get released.

If I had to choose a new CPU at this moment in time I would find it very difficult to say which I'd go for. Especially, when there are new AMD chips due so soon.

intel is the more powerfull and best for gaming atm. if you are wanting to upgrade right away this is the best bet, if you can afford it.

if your not desperate then i think AMD will come out on top when bulldozer comes out

AMDs are cheap atm, good bang for buck. They also seem to have a lot of 6 cores around.

AMD are definatly better for long-term support. If you got a AM3 socket years ago you found yourself buying the latest processor and not having to change boards. How many people got frustrated when Sandybridge used a compleatly new socket?

Intel do seem to make the better CPUs though.

correct me if im wrong but the new intel chips should be 1155 ?

I personally would go Intel i was a AMD fanboy but intel just have the horsepower right now

some new ones will be 1155 others will be 2011. i think anyway.

intel if you want it now, if not then a decent AM3 chip with an AM3+ mobo should keep you in good stead when the bulldozers come out.

depends on your budget really and what you are doing. ie if you are just gaming then you will notice no difference from the x4 to x6 and if you have about £150 to spend then buy an i5 2500k they are miles better than any amd at the moment. (but more expensive)

So is the 955 still good to get the most out of your gpu or has it got to the stage where you would see an improvement from an i5 for instance? I thought it was still enough to not be an issue gaming wise but has that changed now?

that chip should be fine still, but yes, an i5 would be better. if you can afford to wait with your current setup then this is always the best option until everything is clearer.
but, if you do need to upgrade, then i cant see how you can justify building a whole AM3+ ready system without knowing what BD will offer (albeit the chances are it will better SB at some things) so i5 is the only logical option.

There is no such thing as future proof, technology rolls on at an alarming rate, you buy a mobo that is "futureproof" and replace your cpu 4 years down the line, its going to be old hat and slow, so your going to have to upgrade (especially if you like your gaming).
The closest you will ever get to being future proof is knowing you have some time before the next chips/chipset comes out ;)

PS, I would go with what Randall said, intel i5 2500k.

depends, like most people are saying if you want a great price to performance ratio then i would go for AMD something like a phenom II quad would be great for gaming ang leaves you more money for your gpu, i still have my first series phenom quad oc'd to 2.5 and i dont feel that its slowing me and it only reaches around 50 -60 percent in games.
if you have a bit more money and you want the most performance you can get then i would say Intel and the i5 2500K gets a great name :)
personally iam AMD but as a student i would give up that really high end performance and have more money in my pocket
