ok, enough is enough, fed up of my issues now with my 2xHD6850 CF. managed to get a SSD and Silver Arrow, so now running my i5 2500k @ 4.8GHz and decent loading speeds from drive, but still gfx problems.
so........HD6950 2GB or GTX560 1GB? or is there something around the £200 mark thats better?
cant seem to find any Nvidia cards with 2GB Vram?

Either is good, i've had a play about with a 6950 2GB which is in my brothers rig. It runs BC2 so much smoother than my 5870 can and with the extra ram, it will go a long way more too. However i think the 560 edges over on a few frames in certain games and benchies.

found this one for £136

would this be better than 1 of my HD6850s?

the reason im thinking Nvidia is i like the intel quick sync, so with CUDA aswell it should be better? or can they not be run in conjunction?

Have you thought about the 560ti? I believe Gainward do a 2gb version. That would be the one comparable to the 6950. Either would be excellent choices.

ok. so would a 1GB version have a short lifespan compared to a 2GB version?
how would a 2GB GTX460 compare to my HD6850?

so you are saying hangfire until the new cards come out?

i just hate the issues im getting with CF, so want a decent single card. maybe a single HD6850 would be enough

Can't imagine what problems you have had with your 6850CF. Current gen of AMD cards support CF very well, though according to typical vram usage by modern games I don't recommend SLI/CF 1GB cards such like 6850CF.

I'd say wait for the 28nm cards if you can. Buying more 1GB cards can't be recommended by me.

Paradisiac, sell them now, buy an interim card which won't break the bank and will last you until the 28nm cards come out. Set a budget and stick to it. If it were me I wouldn't want anything lower than a 460gtx / 6850 (would games be ok for now with one of your cards?) or anything more costly than a 6950 / 560ti (special weekly offers / B grade / second hand aside of course.) :)

most games are fine, until i want AA turned up and then 1GB i imagine is the cause.
my biggest issue is that the 2 games i play the most, fifa 11 and f1 2010 run bad with the cards. F1 2010 i have managed to work around by lowering a lot of settings, but trying to get fifa 11 to anything near playable is impossible.
but things like BF2, L4D2, Dirt2.....all seem to be fine, until i go crazy with the settings.

Have you tried just turning off one of the cards for these games? silly Q I know but just checking.

yeh unticked the CF box and still issues :(

my current options are :
- keep 2xHD6850 and hope Fifa 12 and F1 2011 sort out the problems
- keep 1xHD6850 and hope its powerful enough
- sell both and look for a card to get me by until next gen are out
- sell both and get something that will be good enough to skip next gen and get the gen after

the cards i have a choice of :
GTX550Ti 1GB - £113
GTX560 1GB - £136
HD6870 1GB - £160
GTX460 2GB - £165
GTX560Ti 1GB - £178
HD6950 2GB - £194

If you are satisfied with the performance in most of the games you play, by disabling CrossfireX in CCC, then I'd recommend you sell one of your 6850s, keep the other, wait until 28nm.

Initially go with option 2. If not sufficient base your decision on your budget. If you're on a tight budget then go to option 3. If still not adequate and you don't want to wait for a high end card then option 4.

im on a £200 max budget, so any of the cards listed are obtainable, i just wonder if any of them will be better than my 2XHD6850s on games that work. and whether hanging fire for newer games to come out might resolve the problems as both Fifa and F1 are known to be buggy :(
