AMD Phenom X4 vs Intel Core 2 and Quad

I think people are expecting too much from AMD.

Sure, if they had Intels R&D budget then they could be expected to bring a market-leader to the table each and every time they released a new CPU.

But they don't. Their R&D budget is a fraction of their biggest competitors.

People forget that pretty much the only reason the A64 trounced the Pentium 4 was because Intel refused to believe that their method could be bettered. Once they woke up and smelt the coffee they released the Core 2 Duo. And we all know what that did to the CPU hierarchy.

So give AMD a break.

I thought the Crysis demo that was released only utilises 1 core?
That's the latest word that i have heard. If true then that is a pretty damn poor benchmark to use on dual/quad cores. The only thing it shows is that a single core Intel has slightly higher IPC than the Phenom which we already kinda know.

Nothing new to see here.

AMD's only chance of not going belly up is if intel are forced to pay them a huge sum in court. Without it, its RIP AMD.

Really, some of you need to step outside your little bubble here. AMD's market share in the OEM & server sectors has been steadily increasing, as has their income from retail sales, and their products are highly competitive with Intels wrt price/performance.

The high end/overclocking segment of the market is good for bragging rights and marketing, but it is *tiny*. Sure AMD might like the kudos of the extreme performance crown, it's unlikely K10 will take it, but it will see the company continue its trend of growth and return to profitability (it's losses incidently having nothing whatsoever to do with the fact that you and your mates are now running Intel for those oh-so-valuable few seconds gain in SuperPi ).

I'm not a fanboy, and concur Intel currently has faster processors, due in large part to the fact that AMDs & Intels development cycles are out of step with each other, but really, this kind of talk is just nonsense.

I'll be running AMD for some time to come because a) I don't need THE faster cpu on the market especially when a midrange one is so strong and b) I don't want Intel to run away with the market as in the long run it'll hurt us all.

In the price/performance category definately AMD is easily capable of holding its own.

They have increased there market share, not too much in the last 12 months, but they have also gone DEEP into the red. In the last 3 quarters they have lost something like $1.7billion($600m, $600m, $500m). AMD don't make profits very often and when they do it isn't too big.

Do you lot recon these will overclock better and are they just as easy to overclock as the current intel ones?

Also is there a lot of good overclocking amd mobos? OCUk dont seem to really stock many and i dont really know what out of the amd mobo range is good.

the EU wont let amd die

Hope not. They ahve been lending a lot of money to AMD. If AMD die europe uses its foot in the pc hardware market pritty much for good. Id imagine they are pressuring amd quite hard.

Trying to be clever?
I was only trying to help.
I've noticed people like you, and the attitude you seem to have.

For godsake, from now on i'Il say nothing and allow the mods to decide!

People like me? LOL. We are the ones who are being smart and not saying anything because there is no reason to point that out as its not even an english add and its just an AD. Ive never seen a link taken down because of an ad. But you going round pointing it out might make a mod do so. You are the one who is just trying to be clever and failing. I have an attitude problem with stupidity. Furthermore ive not seen someone get banned or suspended for just posting a link which does get taken down due to a mistake of it advertising somthing unless its repetitive or done on purpose.

not true. last quart they only had 300mill losses. and they are still paying for the ATI takeover. they are showing huge improvement. their radeon cards market share for instance has gone up 23%. cheap and cheerful is AMD's call sign and thats what Dell and other huge manufacturers want. tie in the fact the new server chips only need a bios update makes it upgrade friendly for business's, along with the fact the server market has increased for them.

@SideWinder

the EU has occasionally lumped money on AMD to keep it going. its the biggest chip manufacturer in Germany and also the EU, at a time when the EU wants to challenge/dominate the US, it wont go bust.
