Hey im not sure if this has already been read. But in Custom Pc magazine they say there is a rumor that samsung may be buying AMD. They say there could be true as say say sources in the industry say AMD could be potentially up for grabs.

Wonder how this would affect AMD/ati and there ability to combat intel and nvida.

Only a rumour but custom pc seem to believe there may be truth in it.

I don't think there is anything to it, as of yet. AMD are in trouble and probably will need to be bought out if they are to survive but Custom PC are probably just printing what people have been predicting, that been IBM or Samsung will take over AMD at some stage.

From what we know AMD have a pretty solid idea of where they are going with fusion and the next gen of GFX cards but they won't see the benefits for many years to come. Both IBM and samsung make more profit than AMD total turnover so they could easily keep AMD ticking over until then. AMD and samsung are both in the flash memory business and AMD license technology from IBM to help them with their manufacturing so both have their own advantages.

Very good reply.

If amd have long term plans like you say however. Nvida and intel will totaly dominate for some time with high prices on their parts. not good :(

I hope something does come of it really. It would change peoples views and opinions from "I hope don't make another poor product next", into "I wonder how good the first Samsung/IBM item will be". But yeah it could only be a rumour, but for years I've always seen Intel and Nvidia as leaders of the pack and ATi / AMD as cheap alternatives even if it wasn't really the case in some points of time. I think other people will also feel the same, and they need to fix that.

AMD/ATi were top dog in the Athlon/Radeon 9700 years though. Quite amazing how dramatic the tables turn in the world of processors and graphics cards.

these rhumers have been round for ages, and nothing has come of it. so i think it's just 1 of those rhumers (i will eat my words if it is true)

things are not looking good for AMD now, thier buy of ati was a big mistake, they should have partnered up with nvidia for a stronger chance for survival.

only thing they got left is thier new quad core setups but intel seem to have that area covered up too now.

How long would you say they have been around for? Ive never heard it and they arn't just going to buy it are they. Would take months of dision making, paper works etc.

i remember this from a while ago. would be awesome if it was true (as long as samsung were willing to invest as needs be and not let AMD slip back to the pre K7 days - and as long as they kept a relationship with IBM)

i wouldnt be suprised if it came to pass soon - remember the whole ATi thing? people dismissed it, then all of a sudden - no more ATi

all the decision making etc could be going on right now - or already have been done for all we know. on the other hand, it could be nothing. we wont know till we see what happens.

im hoping amd pull a chip from there backsides soon so it can kill intel off a but to get some normal prices

hopefully the new amd quad core cpus are cheapo. my bro needs more than one core desperatley since he wants to watch HD videos on 1 screen and use the other screen for web and work. as long as the price is good ill build him up a quad core system to replace his axp-2600+

Wouldn't a dedicated graphics card that handled HD like a 2400/2600 be able to do that on a 1 core system? Bit off topic, but those cards are very cheap and might be worth it.

On topic - I'm not expecting this to happen, but I am expecting AMD to pull out a good chip or two with their quad core stuff at a good price. Hopefully they'll do that, as even people that don't like AMD would suffer if they went under because Intel would just raise their prices drastically.

I really don't understand why AMD brought ATI in the first place....

I say this because AMD 'had' a deal with Nvidia anyway regarding the CSiP platform if anyone on here knows of that? Just seemed weird how they then went off and coupled with ATI...

I dunno, looking at prices I'd say they are pretty 'normal'. C2D for well under £100 and Quad core for well under £200. If you look back historically at the price of decent chips you will find that is very competitve.

I remember a time when paying under £100 meant that you would be getting a severely crippled cpu, not any more.

In fact looking back it was largely AMD's competitive pricing on their Athlon/Tbird/XP range which helped them win market share at a time when Intel prices were a lot higher than they are now. As we have seen with the huge price cuts on the AM2 range a few months back, this year it has been AMD that has been forced to respond to Intel's pricing structure.

yeh it was a real shock to me when i came to upgrade just how cheap intel had priced there ranges of cpu's, a nice surprise to boot:D
amd will find something to pull them out of the brown stuff weather its a killer new chip with better architecture or a new buyer to come in and reshape the company. Only problem with a new buyer is like as stated before, for someone to come in and buy amd/ati would mean time would have to be spent reshaping and rebranding the company, pushing out new products that can compete will take time aswell so there will be another void in the market of atleast a year and because of amd's bright idea of buying ati it will be across the cpu and gpu platform wich isnt good news really

there only competative becase the amd chips are just as good as the intel chips atm for anyone but the overclockers that is, amd kept cutting there prices very quick to make them cut there so we ened this to keep it cheaper but the better the amd chips the cheaper for everything as intel are always more expencive

The future is mobile and mobile is where AMD are weak right now. AMD's answer for this is fusion which is where they are putting all their eggs. For fusion AMD need a partner with GPU knowledge and ATI are much cheaper than Nvivda, as a company.
