Pricedrops happened today. Not a lot on some lines (sliding dollar rate also doesn't help), but a great solution for a budget PC build and a great value Black-Edition for the enthusiast crowd

BUY NOW!

Didn't realise there was a 3.2Ghz AMD chip now :) (ok it's old tech compared to the barcelona, but still good news, for very little money really :) )

even the top cpu's are good priced, making it hard to not use them for cheaper gaming rigs if u aint overclocking

Only the 5000BE that's went down isn't it? Still, wouldn't mind one of them for the unlocked multi, my M2A-VM HDMI is extremely flaky above 260HTT.
Edit: Still awaiting the Phenom drops and the 9600BE, strangely the price is going up in the UK if anything... If only we got the US prices. :(

Woah, nice price for the 5000+ Black Edition... I'd love to own one even if it's only because I'd be able to play with a modern CPU with an unlocked multi for a reasonable price. Shame I don't have an AM2 board, then. :p

Depending on the motherboard I'd say pretty much all new CPU's would hit 3ghz... All new 65nm AMD's seem more than capable from what I've seen and it's pretty much the same for the later 90nm ones. The intels will easily hit 3ghz and some, again depending on motherboard.

There's never been a better time to skimp on the CPU. :D

AMD: you should still be using socket 939, why oh why did you change to socket AM2, ok DDR2 is nice and all but apart from that what else is there?

You had gazillions of happy customers and I think it was a bad move to drop socket 939 :o

Using that logic it's surely a bad thing they dropped 754, I mean dual channel memory is nice and all but I was happy.
If AMD were still using socket 939 people would have still went Intel anyway.

Maybe maybe not, sure the real power users would have but a lot of people who are more casual users (but still upgraders) would have gone for a new tech chip maybe? nice and easy.

Fair point about socket 754 though.

I remember AMD back in the Super Socket 7 days, a platform that accepted both INTEL and AMD CPU's how funny, but INTEL moved on to slot one and AMD stuck with super socket 7 and still were beating INTEL, that was cool.

What do you think was the right strategy for AMD then?

I don't see AM2 as a mistake really, I like DDR2 memory prices compared to DDR prices. :)
They should have still put out a couple more X2's on 939 though instead of killing it off.

As for 754, I didn't really mind. Stuck with it, got the Epox sli board and stuck with it some more, then did what everyone else had done anyway and upgraded.

Yeah fair point but was that part of the plan or is that just a stroke of luck?

Maybe they anticipated that because INTEL had moved to DDR2 then that memory would be most produced? I dunno what?

Is an AMD chip running with DDR2 much faster than regular DDR?

Tell you what, if it weren't for the DDR2 price crash that was starting around April/May time and the fact that my 939 kit was still holding value at the time I would've stayed on 939 for a bit longer. Selling at that time meant my old Opteron and XMS3200XL totally covered the cost of my new Core 2 Duo and (at the time) GeIL Ultra

AM2 really didn't give any advantage over 939 and infact for the first few months, the lack (or price) of quick DDR2 with low timings meant that AM2's weren't keeping up with 939 + TCCD/BH-5 setups.

I suppose it was getting to a stage where cost of DDR2 production was decreasing and it was time for DDR production to drop/totally stop to make way for higher DDR2 production and if they hadn't ditched 939 in Summer '06 it would've only been a matter of months or maybe a year.

-------

The pricing does appear to have improved slightly, particularly on the X2 5000+ BE. Lower end X2's still appear to be decent buy's for high budget non overclockers.
