Sunnyvale (CA) - While keeping his mouth shut about products like Bobcat and Bulldozer, AMD’s CTO Dirk Meyer did indicate during their Q3 conference call that Fab 36 is manufacturing 45nm processors "right now".

He said they’re on track for production ramp in the first half of 2008. AMD’s "first offense" for 45nm products will be server and desktop spaces, though Meyer said he would provide additional guidance in December. Basic yields are being attained right now at 45nm using existing materials.

On the 65nm front, Phenom in on track and will be launched "in the middle of Q4," according to Meyer. It will arrive at 2.5 GHz. So far in Q3, "tens of thousands" of quad-core Opterons have been shipped. They’re expecting "hundreds of thousands" to ship in Q4. Compare that to Intel’s two million quad-cores with twenty different models shipped in Q3. In order to attain the 20% market share AMD hopes for in quad-core space, they’ll have to ship at least 400,000 products in Q4. AMD also shipped record prior-line 65nm and 90nm products in the quarter with an overall ASP increase of roughly 3%.

It was reported Fab 30 has now been shut down and is in the process of conversion to Fab 38. When completed it will be AMD’s second 300mm fabrication facility. AMD’s upcoming RD670 chipset will also arrive in the channel very soon with a mid-quarter launch to end-users.

Well this was always a case of "when" rather than "if". I do think AMD are determined to at least claw back a lot of the gap that Conroe made for itself.

Things might be hotting up soon. Would be nice to see AMD pull something good out the bag to compete with Conroe/Penryn

took them a while (thou not aslong as Intel did getting rid of the hellish netburst) but things are looking up, next few months will be a new battle ground, all we need now are good pricing from both

The way it's been going for AMD I wouldn't be surprised if they have been intentionally suffering so they can create the groundwork to become an unbreakable force in the near future. It certainly looks like they're in a storm but as long as they don't go bust before it clears they might just become much more than a match for Intel. :)

and a net loss of $396 million USD -- this compares to a $611 million USD net loss for Q1 and a $600 million USD net loss for Q2

seems like its getting better for AMD really if you take the number into context. not ideal but showing improvement.

failure on graphics front?
GPUs resulted in a 29 percent increase in graphics revenue to $252 million USD.

seems like its improving and selling well.

AMD really are getting destroyed. What happened to all these new amd cpus coming out? I heard about them some time ago and though mmm sounds good. Then forgot and then never heard any more about them. Everyone is buying Intel now. a lot of people are teching up for crysis and all the good games coming out later thisyear. Amd chips wont be out in time by the looks of it so whos going to buy them but the die hard fans and the people who love buying new stuff constantly?

On the graphics card side of things they are already getting hammered with only their 1950pro and 2900pro and 2600 keeping them in the game. Which they probably sell more of as lots of people want to buy cheap. In the high powered section the 2900xt just isn't worth the buy. The name is tarnished so much they are having to change the name to some 3000 somthing. But are they just shrinking and overclocking it or is it getting any more stream processors etc like nvida's cards? If not i cant see them bouncing back unlessthey are dirt cheap and people will go crossfire. Which i gues would give ati a huge advantage with a lot of peoplehaving crossfire boards and then everyone going crossfire allowing them to sell two to evey person.

anandtech did some preliminary testing on them, and clock for clock they still don;t beat the c2d architecture, but they do come closer now.

The big thing in the future will surely be efficiency? with the price of energy likely to rise (due to risein price of oil, gas etc.) and increase in populations I would hazard that the manufactureres making ultra efficient processors, while maybe not in the same league in terms of performance, would surely have a good grounds for expandingtheir market share to people/businesses who need computers, but want to minimise energy consumption.

I however am not sure on how efficient the C2D and Intels new CPUs are compared to AMD

yeh with sales going up by 29 percent i can see how they are getting hammered.

new cpu's getting delayed means they are destroyed? may i remind you intels new chips should have been out july time? along with the X38 chipset. whilst they have more breathing space than AMD again that article shows AMD are returning to strength. i may remind you as well the server side of things Barcelona seems to have a good edge (only needs a bios update to fit into previous boards etc) it is by no means sank.

stop the panic and doom prophecy's. im by no means a fanboy but its getting tiresome. lets see how the new chips do after xmas then talk.

Up 29% but if they had gone down 40% that doesn't exacly prove much. The reason they are making a come back is because they are doing deals with people like dell to have their graphics cards put in the dell machines. They will probably do the same with their cpu's.

That doesn't help us does it though? From an enthusiast and gamers point of view they are just failing.

it shows improvement. they cannot be getting pummelled as so quoted but doing better than previously. its paradoxical. if you look at the figures they are also including paying for ATI in another lump sum. this along with a almost 200million increase from last quarter is hardly the breaths of a dying company.

nothing wrong with doing deals with dell etc. its how intel kept going when they had inferior processors.

depends how you look at it. the more money they can generate the quicker they can get out of the hole they are in and attract investors, they have their name to the public much more due to their partnerships with better known companys. all this leads to more money so they can improve their CPU and GPU research and production.
so yes it does help us in the long run, however in the short term it isnt that good but then there always has to be someone on top. this time its intel, last year it was AMD.

its nothing new, although they have been hit harder than usual by buying ATI at the same time, there is no doubt they will recover, and to any sensible thinker they will not collapse.

Hope so too. For the sake of our pockets and future cpu development. Without some competition i wonder if where'd we'd be? Single cored PIII Tualatin cpus in 2008? :D

AMD going bust would be VERY bad for the consumer...i really hope they pull sommin out the bag!!

Yeah taht would suck. prices would never drop then and always be on a premium.

I just cant see the new AMD gfx cards being a success unless they are cheap enough to be worth while buys. They ahve just rebranded a failed card with a new name, overclocked it a bit and put it on a smaller die. It wont work. Well as i say tahts as far as i know. if they ahve done other things then i dont mind eating my words. Im not "anti" amd. i buy the best product i can for my money and amd dont seem to be showing any products worth my money at the moment nor in the near future by the sounds of it.

Exactly. I can't believe people are worried. They can't suddenly jump from that large a loss to a massive profit margin. It'll progress out of the negative figures slowly but steadily, if the company is doing well. I'd of been worried if they had made a bigger loss or shown no improvement, but they seem to be getting there imo as well and clawing back some profit. :)

AMD have come a long way over the last few years and I suspect many will be making a killing on their shares in the not so distant future. ;)

I think a thread about AMD going bust is done once ever few months on this place. Someone has lent them a whole lot of money to buy ATI; they wouldnt have done that if they thought the company was going down the drain.
