Looks like the the Intel® Atom has a bit of competition on the way! . . . I'm wondering how to quantify this "90% of todays mainstream performance" bit? . . . if thats based on an AMD® Athlon™ II X2 then the future for low power computing is certainly looking interesting! :)

very interesting indeed. Things are certainly coming along very nicely in terms of mobile computing. The atom is 5W iirc (may be wrong) so the sub 1W part will do wonders for battery life assuming the chipset isnt a power hungry beast.

Atom is also sub 1 watt "capable" (if you ignore the chipset power use) - the question is how useful is either CPU in sub 1watt configuration. Nice to see some competition tho should drive things forward nicely.

Sub 1 watt capable with OOO should make me think should be pretty competitive. IIRC Intel had to ditch the OOO and the performance gains that come with it in order to save power. Of course only benchmarks will tell the real story.

Interesting read, the key thing for me though is how much faster than an Atom is it. Even older netbooks like my NC10 have 6 hour battery lives, and some of the lates gen are getting 10 hours plus.

Personally I'd prefer to see faster CPUs rather than even longer battery lives.

That's just 10 hours of browsing and office work though isn't it? Try playing video files or gaming and it goes down dramatically. There's always room for improvement in power usage.

They're not really designed for watching videos or gaming though are they? :p

I just use mine for web design really and it manages ok, struggles a bit at times though.

Maybe they are now. Granted, if you are gaming or watching videos, you are inherently sacrificing battery life. But it's nice to have the option. I love my UL30A in that regard. Can do some light work, or watch some BBC I Player / live F1-Moto GP, and still have some comfortable battery life. A netbook will struggle a bit more in that regard, but now, maybe not!

Having a netbook / small notebook powerful enough for on-the-spot light gaming and HD decoding is appealing. At least to me. Come here ya sexy 1215N!

I have a Samsung N510 netbook and think it's great but it is let down a little by the Atom processor. Something like this would great.

Just wondering if it's a bit late though.

Looks like this badboy might find its way into my HTPC and directly replace a green/red team solution which would be nice.
