AMD® Phenom™ II Overclocking Thread

Just started prime and got the BSOD straight away!! :( the mulitplyer was set to 18x and everything else on default, might try it on 17x and see how it goes
 
Hello liamcrane and welcome to the thread! :) . . . . please read the welcome post here and preferably the whole thread . . . . sorry I missed your previous posts 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 . . . so it seems you are a complete beginner eh! :D . . . . can you tell me how long you had the new system please, also can you tell me what the idle and load temps are of your chip while it is running at stock? . . . all the apps you need are in the welcome post, best to start a bit slower as it seems you don't know what you doing! :p . . . . slow down buddy! :cool:
 
Hi wayne thanks for the welcome its an amazing thread this!! I am indeed a complete begineer to the world of OC :). I have had my system for about 5 months if that i would say my setup is in my sig what do you think of it?

My idle temps at stock on my 955, they are around 28c this is with cool and quiet i think when i checked cpuz the vcore was only showing 0.95 so its doing its job for sure and slowing it down. As for load temps when i last played crysis i remember it around 40c that was in my old place tho my new room is very cool, bloody freezing infact lol so im sure that will play a part. I have just bought a new 5850 and i dont want to bottleneck it by running my cpu at stock. The main prob i have is when i have to start looking at overclocking ram and upping voltages etc just dont want to fry my board.

In many games there will be some bottlenecking if you leave your CPU at stock, but it's not a massive loss...and don't worry with a bit of time and effort you'll get a decent overclock :D
 
i still think u won't see much bottlenecking even at that res...

but your cpu should do 3.6ghz on stock voltage.. is it c2 or c3?

Hey Liam, what I would suggest is to reset your system back to stock or backdown the overclock to stock, for "testing" purposes only I think it would be reasonable if you "disabled" CnQ in BIOS . . . . then download CPU-z, Core Temp, Fritz Chess Benchmark and Prime 95 which are linked in the welcome post, download them, unzip them, run Core temp, run CPU-z, watch CPU-z for a few minutes and write down on a piece of paper the vCore figure, it may be a static vCore figure or it may move up & down, write all the variations down, also in CPU-z look at the [Memory tab] and note down NB Frequency, DRAM Frequency, FSB: Dram ratio and the main timings (numbers), unzip and run Fritz benchmark (a few times) write down the scores (or take a sceenie PRT SCN) . . . . next run prime 95 blend "Stress Test" for 30mins-1 hour, check if the vCore figure changes at all and also take a note of the "load" temps shown in core temp . . . once you done all this you will be ready to overclock your chip from 3.2GHz to 3.4GHz! :cool:
 
That's a pretty low res and there are games that will definitely show an increase in framerates with increased core speed. I do agree though that the bottlenecking issue is far overhyped.

I have ran all the tests you suggested and this is what i have found.

At idle my results are

VCORE 1.328-1.344
29C

MEMORY
N.B FREQ 2008.7MHZ
DRAM FREQ 401.8MHZ
FSB:DRAM 1:2
RAM TIMMINGS 5-5-5-18-24 2T

Highest temp got was 38c during this test.

After running prime for 30mins didnt seem to be any errors and had a max temp of 41c, the vcore did drop to 1.28 tho.

I believe i do have a really good airflow in my case i have the antec 1200 with all the fans on the lowest setting so i do tend to turn them all up a bit when im gaming.
 
Nice one, how come there is two Fritz windows? :D . . ok go into BIOS and take the vCore from [Auto] and set it to say 1.25vCore and try all the tests again! (takes notes of the vCore/Temps too!) :)
 
My blend's been going for 3 hours this time..

The temperature max is misleading... My mother kept my room boiling hot again.. Opened the window slightly, it dropped 9c...
 
Will do wayne cheers, just gone into the bios is the setting i need to change cpu over voltage? I was wondering if yo could do this thru amd over drive or is it just safer to stick to the bios.

The reason there is 2 friz windows is i pasted 2 different results :) is there a way i can post the images without pasting them in paint?

liam, you will be fine using AMD overdrive to do that quick undervolt test! :) . . . obviously we would love to explain all the ins and outs of image editing and posting things up but we really need to keep to the overclocking stuff, settings, hardware, temps etc in this thread otherwise it just makes it harder to read for people in the future, if you really want to sus out the image stuff feel free to mail me direct at the address here :cool:
 
liamcrane, tbh i wouldn't use core temp program because it doesn't give the "real" temp of the cpu..

use something like hwmonitor, the real cpu temp is either tmpin0 or tmpin1 (depending on the motherboard)
