He's not saying that, he's just saying using 3rd party programs to introduce an extra point of failure in the process when it's not needed is perhaps not the best idea and might be a cause of people's problems. It does seem that the guys who have problems are the ones who have faffed more previously.
Conversely I think drivers are as easy as they've ever been to use. Haven't had a problem in years and I've just installed over the top of the old ones or done a clean install (from within the driver wizard itself) on major changes (crimson launch, relive). Haven't even bothered to reinstall on updating graphics cards.
