AMD says PhysX will die

personally if Nvidia can stick decent PhysX into a game for free with little rendering impact then why not? i know it wont account for a poor story or poor game play but id rather have it than not, if i had to pay or it put a massive dent in FPS then i wouldn't want it but meh..... why not....

i can't wait for mirrors edge on the pc and only really want it for doing some freerunning on, as i enjoy it in the real world. same with assassins creed i mostly just run about havin fun and killing folk :D

So where's the PhysX games? What does PhysX offer gamers currently?

Well you know if Ageia Physx PPU's had taken off and Rockstar games added support to GTA4 PC it probably would have run far better, but alas it didn't take off so we get a game that runs ridiculously bad on cutting edge systems.

You need a quad core to even get a reasonable frame-rate from GTA4 and I'd bet that is mainly down to the extensive physics engine running off the CPU.

having nVidia control something that they want as an industry standard, in my opinion, isn't best for the consumer.

As I said ealier, imagine how it would be if ATi or nVidia controled DirectX and therefore optimized it to run on their hardware, while also stating that it works best on their own hardware, while also trying to maintain that it's an open standard.

It wouldn't be good. I don't want PhysX to die as such, but the whole IP and control of it by nVidia needs to die.

That brings to mind blu ray. Blu ray is good in the sense its higher capacity etc but do you really want sony controlling it? Just like xbox is "holding up" game development cause companies arn't gonna redesign games for ps3 cause they have the extra disk space but would xbox adopt blu ray is sony controls it?

I think the same for physx, why would developers design their games if only one company could take advantage of it? Without ATI backing it then that creates a similar situation tho if physx dies or not is another matter. IMO it would be a shame if it did cause if used correctly (like so earlier examples mentioned earlier in the post) it could bring a lot to gaming

I think a genuine concern is that Nvidia would develop PhysX behind closed doors whilst developing hardware tailored towards it. They could then artificially give themselves a year or so jump over ATi in terms of support of the new revision of the SDK by not giving them access to the specification until a while after they'd been in development for new features and such.

I think that is spot on and if ati had physx they would do the same they not there to make a level playing field but to make money and any advantage they can get over each other they will take.

Exactly that. I, like you, own an 8800 GTS 320 which I have in my general use/gaming computer. Now I'm all for free stuff and fanciful physics effects and added gameplay and all this marketing malarky, but frankly I intend to upgrade this graphics card some day. I don't want to be faced with a choice in which I have to decide between a horrendously expensive graphics* card which I probably won't be able to afford, or one that is barely useful at all for current games at the time, because of mysteriously substandard support of an API used by most games.

*no I'm not overreacting, we'd still have £320+ GTX260's and £200 9800 GTX's if it weren't for decent competition.

I liken PhysX to what I call the "iPhone phenomenon".

How many people have you seen with iPhones who are all too keen to show you their light sabre app or iPint software or any number of other pointless gadgets but, when asked what they have installed on there that's actually useful, can't really come up with anything.

Too damn many in my case and this is the problem with PhysX - all it adds to games are pointless "bells and whistles" which are incidental to the game itself and which the latter could easily live without.

I hope physx dies, but i doubt i will with the nvidia machine behind it. They will just throw money at people until they use it.

How can people not see a problem with nvidia controlling physx? it is not "open to everyone" because the source code is not open. Nvidia could do any number of tweaks behind the scenes to pull themselves in front if it was indeed adopted by ATi, i highly doubt its a matter of cant but a matter of shouldn't

Physics built into direct x is probably the best bet for future of physics tbh

@Pottsey
I would love to know who actually likes you posting like that
I mean i could post like this just to be annoying
it's readable but when you press quote to respond its a nightmare, the same applies to your posting "style".
But i suspect its just to make it as awkward as possible for people to respond to you

I'll challenge you on that, :p

I've got useful apps on my iphone that are pretty useful to me.

My Rail, since I'm regularly between cities.

Shazam, because I'm always hearing music that I'd like to know the name of.

Guitar Scales, (i'm learning :p) which is useful to have a load in one app on my phone so I don't need to look them up on my PC or have a book with them in.

Guitar Chords, same reasons as above.

Mobile Safari, ok ok, it comes installed, but it's the internet, and very useful to me :D.

Seriously though, I get what you mean, I know of people who have iPhones, but don't have a useful use for pretty much all the apps you can get for it.

PhysX is a totally waste of time until it becomes a requirement and you see massive benifits from using it
mirror edge with physx looks ok, but it need to get a lot better than that to be impressive
