AMD is making a habit out of launching crippled CPUs that can easily be unlocked to provide access to a disabled core. We saw it with triple-cores, and now it appears you can get an extra core on the new Sempron 140 as well.

The Sempron 140 is a cheap single-core part, based on the Sargas core, which is in fact a crippled Regor dual-core. You just need a motherboard with an AMD SB710 or SB750 sourthbridge with support for the Advanced Clock Calibration and you should be able to turn your Sempron 140 into an Athlon II X2.

This basically means you can get a dual 45nm processor clocked at 2.7GHz for $39/€29, which is truly great value, especially considering it's rather OC friendly.

Good news for people wanting a cheap as chips but very capable HTPC/Spare PC or whatever :p

That's pretty sick for the price. Might look into this as the parents are after a new PC to replace their old Athlon 64 939 system.

Is this some new covert marketing strategy by AMD to win over many of the fans it lost to Core2? I can't believe they've done it again!

We the consumer benefit yet again, yes thanx I'll have my free cores plz! :D

Maybe OcUK should start unlocking/overclocking these in their lab, I would have paid extra for one that was pre-tested by them as it removes all risk...

These should work fine with 780G boards but be sure to flash to the latest BIOS as these are not based on the Deneb core. :)

I have disabled Cool 'n' Quite and used the hybrid ACC option in automatic mode on my GigaByte MA785GMT-UD2H modo, but after reboot the windows system didn't boot.

I hope some extra voltage can make my system stable but I didn't want to overvoltage the CPU, the NB or HT.

Could anybody send me proper BIOS settings (voltage and frequency values) for unlocking the Sempron 140?
