AMD Socket Question

we all know its in the works thanks to leaks etc. And i don't want to fall into the trap i did last time (yay 939, the prices are dropping buy processor OMG they released AM2 already? great, now i can never upgrade until a full system change)

Anyway, my PC is getting older now thanks to being stuck with damn 939 and its 0 support... And i'm considering upgrading (RAM and graphics make no difference, the bottleneck on my system is the processor)

BUT i don't want to upgrade to have the same situation arise again, so i was wondering if anyones heard anything on the rumour mill about when the next AMD socket is to be released.

---edit----

I am an AMD fanboy its true, every Intel system i've owned the processor has blown (no joke i didnt even overclock) hence why i'm focusing on AMD.

----edit----

so far all i've found is sometime in 2008, so even more specific as an estimate of which quater would be appreciated,

although they'd be compatible, from what i've read the AM3 won't be running at 100% capability. But after looking around a bit i have found that AMD is making the new processors backwards compatible on sockets, (thank god they finally do SOMETHING right)

I'm actually looking forward to my next upgrade now. I'll probably be on here with my budget asking for some build advice :P

If the (100%) backwards compatibility is true, then I may actually look towards an AM2 upgrade (from my current S939). They can be had so cheap atm..

My 939 system's lasted me pretty well.

Purchased at launch, along with a 3500+, then a processor upgrade to an Opty 180 last year.

Just about starting to reach retirement age now, though.

Do be fooled by this backward compatibility thing. Its not just down to AMD is also down to the Motherboard manufacturer.

AMD said that Quad Opterons would be backward compatible. However it depends on the board.

They also said Phenoms would run on AM2 motherboards with a simple bios update. Of course if your motherboard manufacture doesn't provide the simple bios update then you will have to buy a new board anyway.

I have an AM2 board I bought this time last year, ASUS haven't released a BIOS for the Phenoms for it yet and I doubt they will.

My advice is to take this backward compatibility thing with a pinch of salt.

AM3 will be DDR3 only... its arguable what the performance increase will be.

If you can wait then do so, its definitely better, if you cant AM2+ is not a bad socket all and DDR2 is cheap(Affordable 8GB anyone?), and you also have PCIe2 and access to quad cores... i doubt that a quad core at 3GHz will become the cinding scenario anytime soon.
