AMD Stock Jumped 13% on Friday

Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMD) is officially back from the dead. The company, which spent the last few years in the shadows, has finally regained its footing.

No wonder AMD stock is up a whopping 112.1% since the start of 2016.

Much of the credit goes to AMD CEO Lisa Su, who’s been at the helm for nearly two years now. Her leadership led to a completely new direction for AMD stock. (Source: “How AMD CEO Lisa Su Tripled the Chip Maker’s Stock in 5 Months,” Fortune, July 22, 2016.)

Most of the sales boom was caused by better-than-anticipated sales for special video game chips. The firm’s entire selection of graphics processors was flying off the shelves.

Great news for AMD, Nvidia doing well too (Very well). This is what we want. A healthy PC industry.

In before someone says why post this, well all the negative AMD stock reports from a while back got threads on here. Why not a positive one? :P

Yes this is good news. We need AMD to do well, so then all the Nvidia GPUs and Intel CPUs we want to buy will be cheaper :p

If AMD can pull it back together we may not need to go Nvidia / Intel for the best performance. Hopefully this is AMD turning the tide and onto better products.

Exactly, and the only thing stopping me from looking at AMD is the amount of money I've spent on G-Sync and 3D-Vision kit. We really need all the monitor technologies to be available on both brands of GPUs, but I can't see that happening.

Their market cap is still 1/6th of Nvidias, but last year was 1/12th. Good progress given that Nvidia is also growing.
Lets have 50/50% on share please!

yeah, I don't see that happening either. Hey look, a fellow 3D kit owner!

Reading that article seems to indicate a lot of the revenue posted seems to have come from the sale of two of its Chinese departments and the saving from a load of staff layoffs both around Oct 2015?

So really how much of the revenue is due to product sales if they only posted 69 mil profit for first quarter? also doesn't most of the revenue come from chips in consoles?

This is a genuine question not a dig at AMD.

Not sure but you will see the stock value correct itself if investors realize the profits come form staff layoff and selling assets.

Stock is already down 3.6% today, but the overall trend ahs been very healthy for AMD since Q1.

Then the article would be completely wrong. Neither are included in the revenue figure. The former is reflected in the net income/loss figure and the latter in the operating income/loss.

The AMD release clearly spells it out - the revenue increase is due to to higher sales of semi-custom SoCs.

PC gaming is on the up despite what the naysayers will tell you.

AMD is smart to keep at it even though they're considerably behind Nvidia. Maybe they can close the gap somewhat with DX12.

AMD's AIB GPU's share increased slightly at the expense of Nvidia despite the GTX 1060/70/80

That is for Q1, 6 months before Pascal GPUs were released.

Regardless, I doubt that AM's market share increasing by 1.7% is at all responsible for the share price hike.

It is most likely as I indicated above, speculation that AMD might be bought out.

What is most interesting about that though is the breakdown of the sales.
Mainstream declined in sales and Performance increased.

Now you know why Nvidia have been aiming at performance and enthusiast markets because they are showing growth. Q3 results could be quite interesting with AMD not providing as much competitive products in the growing market segments.

Could be the emergence of consumer VR that has helped fuel the 'high-end' and 'enthusiast' segments of the market. If so, then AMD should do well from Q3 with the release of the RX480, which has been marketed as a VR card.
