AMD Technology at GDC

Are we expecting anything new from the green or red teams in terms of actual cards around end of May/June time? Thinking my 770 may need an upgrade for Watchdogs and the like :)

Put it this way, how gpu's get made is a design gets taped out, which in short basically means, they get masks made which enables the foundry to etch the right pattern into the chips AND the first chips made come back from the fab. At that point the chip is "taped out" and you do not, will never get a launch of a product until pretty much 6 months after the tape out.

We've had pretty damn accurate leaks of when the tape out has happened on pretty much every new gen chips for the past 10 years........ we have had no information on the tape out of a single 20nm product from AMD/Nvidia, no indication of being close either. So I would say based on the lack of info about products taping out we are a minimum of 6 months away from new high end cards.

It will likely be in 12-18 months before we start getting cross platform games that are potentially very very hard on current high end graphics cards.

Time will tell.

I think it's worth remembering that Frosty's agenda of insisting that everything AMD said about Mantle in the first couple announcement was effectively lies thus the idea they will release it publicly is equally unreliable.

This is yet another indication that AMD is doing precisely what they said with regards to Mantle.

Ultimately Frosty's stance that AMD put money, time, man power into Mantle, just to refuse to let people use it was....... ridiculous. This is another step that AMD said was coming, at the same time frame they said it was coming months ago. But as pointed out, he specifically posts pics of those slides while saying himself that the public version will come after that(being the beta SDK).

It honestly is a ridiculous stance for Frosty to be taking(and for no other reason than being anti AMD in every thread possible), it makes no sense to anyone on earth that AMD would make Mantle then refuse access to it. The only thing AMD has done is turned away one dev(apparently) towards the end of the Alpha when it is absolutely daft to add new dev's, Frosty using this as an indication AMD will never release the SDK widely is just laughable.

My point was not so much about Frosty being wrong but he is suspended and not had the chance to say "Fair play, I got it wrong". Another childish Gif from Matt wasn't required and at least wait till Frosty is back to see what he had to say.

Developer access to #mantle SDK coming in April!
..
Anyone remember Frosty saying Mantle SDK will never be available? :p

Rendering Battlefield 4 with Mantle

Check out the slides on the link below.

In this technical presentation from Game Developers Conference 2014, Johan Andersson shows how the Frostbite 3 game engine is using the low-level graphics API Mantle to deliver significantly improved performance in Battlefield 4 on PC and future games from Electronic Arts. He will go through the work of bringing over an advanced existing engine to an entirely new graphics API, the benefits and concrete details of doing low-level rendering on PC and how it fits into the architecture and rendering systems of Frostbite. Advanced optimization techniques and topics such as parallel dispatch, GPU memory management, multi-GPU rendering, async compute & async DMA will be covered as well as sharing experiences of working with Mantle in general.

Cheers Matt.. seems like a lifetime away. I bet AMD will be working hard on Mantle in the meantime but even so DX12 is looking good for GCN cards and Fermi onwards. Exciting times ahead :)

Square Enix is also partnering with AMD for their forthcoming game Murdered: Soul Suspect. Murdered will be integrating a number of unspecified Direct3D 11 effects. Like Rebellion Developments, Square Enix is a regular AMD partner, having worked with AMD on past titles such as Tomb Raider.

Finally, AMD and developer Xaviant have confirmed that Lichdom will be integrating support for AMD’s TrueAudio technology and their TressFX Hair technology. Lichdom was already being used to demonstrate TrueAudio back at AMD’s Hawaii press event, so this is largely a confirmation that the final game will include the technology. TressFX ont he other hand is a more recent addition.

TrueAudio in Lichdom and TressFX

Murdered: Soul Suspect from Square Enix partnering AMD as well :)

This is great (except will it push the hardware pace, or will it be good timing for 16nm?) in theory as the 290/780 will handle those games in xmas 2015 just fine?
