I'm so excited with all the recent announcement from team red and blue. I'm currently leaning towards AMD purely from a price point view. I also appreciate the 64 pci lanes. which will you guys be getting and why?

As above waiting for coffeelake as i think both threadripper and skylake x will be overkill for 99 percent of home users .

Nothing is overkill :D, but either system would be way out of my and most others price range when a much cheaper system will work equally as well. (edit: for I and most others do)

I do agree with the OP it will be very interesting to see how these systems compare. Personally I think we will see Intel with the performance advantage but at a much higher cost, while based on performance/cost I think AMD will be very tempting to many. If AMD take both performance and price then its happy days for everyone :)

If this is overkill for gaming what is the next AMD CPU that isn't. I'm looking to upgrade my 4790k later this ear for something with at least 6 cores, has AMD got anything other than the current Ryzen CPUs coming out that fits the bill?

Not until Zen+.

Threadripper has me more excited than Intel's lineup.

The platform as a whole seems to make more logical sense for those not willing to spend £££ on the 44 lane 7900X+ models from Intel (I am going on the assumption that the "lower" TR models will be cheaper than the Intel equivalent).

I won't be doing anything until both have been reviewed thoroughly.

I don't need either but I just like playing around with new things. However, the prices of both will dictate whether I get involved or not. From looking at the per-1000 unit prices of the Intel X299 stuff then I think it's safe to say I'm not going to be going that route. Threadripper will be interesting if the price is right so I'm going to just wait and see.

Looks like Ghz of new silicon CPUs have hit a brick wall. Have had quad core for about 10 yrs and just made the move 6 core last year. It seems Moores law is going to continue by increasing core count from now on the way these double digit core CPU are being announced.
Yes some games are still single core frequency dependent but I think the law of diminishing return applies here and there is little point getting a faster CPU/platform for games if yours is fairly recent already. The latest and greatest graphic card is going to give you a bigger boost.
I think from now on, if you are an enthusiast after a cpu/mb upgrade, it will be more cores you'll be wanting.

Bear in mind Coffeelake is just Kabylake (which is Skylake) again.

It was added by Intel recently to be the first time they've done 3 releases on the same node.

So this is just 6-core Skylake on 14nm++ basically.

This isn't true is it?

Coffelake is Intels new mainstream platform.

Not personally interested in threadripper or Intels new platform. But it'll be interesting to see just how much performance AMD can offer end users at home.

Nope, Coffeelake is another Skylake refresh. And Cannonlake is/was too.

Coffeelake is a 14nm version of Cannonlake, because Intel's 10nm is taking longer to mature then they hoped. It was going to go like this:
  • 14nm new arch -- Skylake
  • 14nm refresh -- Kabylake
  • 10nm refresh/shrink -- Cannonlake
  • 10nm new arch -- Ice Lake

But ended up as:
  • 14nm new arch -- Skylake
  • 14nm refresh -- Kabylake
  • 14nm refresh 2 -- Coffee Lake (refreshed again because 10nm taking too long to mature, and 14nm now VERY mature and performs better so now called 14nm++)
  • 10nm refresh/shrink -- Cannonlake
  • 10nm new arch -- Ice Lake

Ice Lake is the next actually new arch from Intel. All others are refreshes and/or minor tweaks of Skylake.

Coffeelake will be Intel's first mainstream 6 core chip. Yes it's still 14nm but should at least 20 -30% jump in performance. Really want the 6 cores mainstream desktop on z370. Not interested in x299 it's a bit silly for only gaming
