Another possibility being that the production rate has increased and they have sufficient supply now. With more supply than demand they are bound to drop prices to shift stock.
Also they might be trying to get rid of inventory before the next cards are launched like they did with the 290 series last year.
Might as well reduce it 50%....even the that noisy underpowered POS wouldn't sell

Tucked under the 980 in terms of cost I think makes it a very decent purchase although it makes you wonder what they will be doing with the cost of the 390x and down...
I never get that either, some people seem to require they practically give a card below the price of the competitions weaker cards before they'll have the common sense to just give them a try.Why would it cost under the gtx980 when it's a much faster card. Somewhere in between the gtx980 and the 980ti makes more sense.

Dont see the point of buying any AMD card right now, unless your really struggling that is, the new gen stuff is not far away, might aswell wait it out, especially if like me you waited on fury and was let down by that.
Im still using my 290 Tri-X, its served me well and i dont play anything that taxes it either to be honest (mostly D3 and Grim Dawn), however i have cash ready to splash on a new card once the new gen comes out, i want a new monitor and probably VR, gpu choice will dictate monitor choice etc.
Even if the Fury stuff is reduced i doubt it will be reduced enough to tempt many to buy, especially as its going to be not much more than a short term upgrade.
The same could be said for any card but people are still lapping up 980ti's, etc when we all know the price will probably halve in 5 months time if the new cards are faster.
980ti is a beast of a card though, and when you compare it to the 980 its a much better card, even more laughable when compared to the TitanX.
While thats true, the Fury stuff was overpriced from the start for what you actually got, then the pump whine issues, "overclockers dream" lie etc, and ontop of that charging a premium because you dont want to be perceived as a budget brand.
I dislike Nvidia but atleast they actually done a good job with the 980ti, sure they shafted their titanx customers and lied to their 970 customers, but they hit the ball out of the park with the 980ti.
AMD have failed to be truthful, the FuryX was a massive letdown, the first card with a brand new memory tech, it should have been so much better than it is, then it was plagued by pump whine and it overclocks worse than a turnip.
If like me you currently have a 290 theres pretty much zero point buying the 390, the Fury is roughly 980 performance for more money and the FuryX is laughable at best, so really if you own a 290 and want a new AMD card, the smart move is to sit tight and wait for the new cards *IF* they live up to expectations.
There is a danger of playing the waiting game but at some point everyone who likes to game on PC's needs to upgrade, this is my last chance with AMD, if the Polaris cards are crud im going to have to buy Nvidia and get locked into their G-Sync tech etc, if that happens AMD wont see a penny from me for years as i dont upgrade monitors often.
Im sure im not the only person with this mindset either

You and others are misunderstanding me. The Fury is already priced in the middle of the 980s, so where would a reduction take it? A look at my signature would give a clue that I know how good a card it is. For the benefit of the AMD defence force, I wasn't saying that they have to reduce price, merely pointing out what a good deal they would be if the price is reduced. Christ almighty.Come on, be realistic please tell me how would it be a "decent purchase", it would be an absolute steal priced below 980. Why should AMD reduce the price of a Fury to below that of a considerably slower card? It's ridiculous that some people seriously would not consider AMD unless they were cheaper than a slower Nvidia alternative and even then would only stretch to saying "decent purchase".
Having owned both GPUs I can say at 4K the 980 is unplayable at the same settings the Fury is playable (~30 vs ~40 FPS average) even when overclocked the 980 was unplayable. The difference between 980 and Fury is larger than the gap between Fury and 980Ti at 4K (owned one of those as well). Even at 1440p the difference is around 15%+ overall.
I'm sorry if I sound over the top but this is an absolutely mind boggling comment to make and shows the massive hurdle AMD have to overcome to win over market-share.

Beast or not that doesn't really change the point that if there is no point in upgrading due to future cards coming out then that applies for all cards980ti is a beast of a card though, and when you compare it to the 980 its a much better card, even more laughable when compared to the TitanX.

me liking/not liking AMD has nothing to do with that god horrible, under performing, overpriced, whiney POS card that AMD spun so many lies about
But yeah AMD at the moment are royally not delivering for me personally, mainly driver issues. With each one that comes along to improve a previous known issue, they generate another catastrophe.
Yeah i know what you mean, and for drivers im still on 15.8, which are fine.
