Hi folks, alittle help here would be wonderful. had a little look around and couldnt quite get the answer i wanted.

im looking at moving over to an intel chip, c2d, from my old 3200 a64 (normal single core), and was wondering what cheaper c2d would be worth going for, and what current amd processor would it be comparable to ?

im an amd user since the dawn of time :) lol and will be my first time ever moving over to intel.

any info and advice much welcome ! :D

mix of everything, including some gaming , but not extreme gaming , more occasional. i have a nvidia 7900gs card at moment, which, even with my current setup (a3200, 1gig ddr1 ram), games and stuff go pretty well really, but ive not upgraded apart from gfx in over 2 years now, but i want to do it relatively cheaply. kinda <150 quid at most, hence me curious about the low end core 2 duos, and their amd counterparts, so i can get an idea how much better a cheap c2d would be.

If I were you, I'd get an e2160 (roughly comparable to an AMD x2 4000) at stock with an ASrock 4Core as I can vouch for this combo (see sig) comes to ~£100 although I got my combo 2nd hand for £79 from the MM.

You can use your DDR1 and either PCI-e or AGP gfx card. Don't run your C2D at stock though. It's not allowed...:p

The e2160 has only 1Mb cache compared to the 2Mb of e4x00 series and 4Mb of conroe. Melbourne720 has done a good guide to show what that means in real world usage. Apparently the release of a e2180 (2Ghz) is immenent, so If you're overclocking and want to hit ~3Ghz this would be a good choice, providing the price is attractive compared to the e4500.

Melbourne720's cache guide:

Hope that helps

Depends in what time frame uou're looking to upgrade, Amd could turn out to be very promessing for the future, Even an upgrade to a AMD x2 4200 or higher, and an AM2 motherboard will keep you in the upgrade possiblities there the AMD barcelona, will support AM2

Yeah, good guide that :D

The e2180 could be the golden chip to use with the ASRock board, as they get to around 305MHz FSB, then you'd be getting 3GHz goodness:)

No sign of the 2180 though at OCuk, come on Gibbo, there are plenty of competitors with this chip!

i was in the same boat as OP, same cpu and always a AMD person and just got the
E6750 and 2 gig of ddr2 ram with the future upgradable P35C-DS3R motherboard, a very nice improvement noticed

i used to be an AMD fanboy, moving from AMD to Intel was the best move ever, cant see me going back to AMD tbh. have a 6300 (1.86 stock) ive mine at 3.15, was so easy to do!

well, just an update on things. i hung around a few weeks to see what was what,. and purchased the e2180, an asus p5e sli mobo, and 2gig of geil ram :) i think that should do me.. but i do feel like a trator by moving from years of amd over to intel :) lol

no worries, they have betrayed you but not providing new AMD chips quickly enough. Let us know how you get on with that e2180, make sure you have a decent heatsink on that chip :)

well, it was only ordered today, so maybe thursday or friday before i get it. im keeping my other stuff for the time being, and next month sometime will get the new 8800 gt card at some point :)

its not often i get a new upgrade or such for my pc, infact, last one was well over 2 years ago, so it will be much welcomed !

personally, its never bothered me where i go with hardware,. ive mostly gone with amd over the years as they have been cheaper, and in a lot of cases better for the money. this time ive not had an upgrade for over 2 years, and thought id move over to intel for a change, see how good these core 2 based cpus are. im no fanboy mind. :)

this new setup (especially when i get the vidcard too), will probly last me another 2+ years.

anyone have any review links for the e2180 ? i couldnt find anything anywhere.

honestly, get whatevers best in price that year. as most benchmarks will tell you gamings sake, a 2Ghz dual core is enough for "almost" any game, and a 2.5Ghz dual core IS enough for ANY game. either c2d or a X2 are more than capable of maxing out any graphics card setup. phenom, even if its great, its not needed, neithers a quad core. its all complete overkill for anyone that doesn't do media encoding or 3drendering type work. for surfing, video, gaming a £80 cpu will give you 1-2% less performance than a £600 cpu. spend as much as you can afford on a graphics card then put a cheap cpu in and you'll be happy with the results.

for instance the crysis demo shows a fairly noticable difference between a 1.66Ghz c2d and a 2.13Ghz chip, and very little difference from 2.13 to 2.6, or 3Ghz. infact the 1.66Ghz chip gave fairly decent performance.
